Working in school admin

Have put this in Chat as not sure which part of the Education topics to put it in!

Possible dream job has come up at local school working in a senior role in their administration team. School is in process of joining an Academy (not their choice, Ofsted directed). It's a complete change for me, I've read the job description and can do everything they want, I've done it in a commercial environment, but have no school admin background - am I mad to go for it?

Main question though, does anybody know who actually is your employer when you work in school admin - is it the Council, the LEA (which is a section of the council), is it the school? And does that differ in an Academy Trust, are you employed directly by the academy?

If it’s part of a Multi Academy Trust then you are employed by the Trust.

I’m school admin for a school which is now part of a MAT.

I love my job but preferred being employed by the LA as the MAT is t terribly well run.... but improving.. they wanted us as we are outstanding and are helping to pull them up.

Thanks for that. Not keen on being employed by the Trust ... Have been in pseudo-civil-service for most of my career, and whilst I wouldn't have minded joining the Council/LEA, I'm less inclined to go to an unknown quantity.

If you were to join the school prior to the academy conversion, then your employment terms but would those set out by the LA which will then be Tupe’d across at the point of conversions. So your T&C would be protected.

There is no harm in applying, good quality admin staff are hard to come by, if you have lots of transferable skills and can pick up the education systems quickly then you should be ok.

I’m an office manager in a primary school, I have also worked in schools that have converted to academies. Feel free to ask anything!!
