Do you have Mischief Night where you live? When is it for you?

We are near York and for us Mischief Night has always been (or since 1605 I suppose) 4th November ie the night that Guy Fawkes and his gang were making mischief and getting the gunpowder ready. But I see from a BBC article that for some parts of the UK it's 30th October, night before Halloween. The article suggested it harked back to times when 'mischief' was tolerated for a night I guess like the Purge but a lot tamer.

I distinctly remember being read the riot act in assembly that if anyone so much as dropped an egg and it transpired they were from our school there would be serious consequences. Shops would restrict the sale of eggs and flour in the run up (putting baking ingredients in the same category as knives and alcohol Grin). Thankfully it seems to not be such a thing in recent years but perhaps it's just the area.

Is it still a thing where you live and what day is it? I suspect it's more a northern thing but not sure what gives me that idea (maybe we are more unruly!)

No - not in Norfolk where I grew up, or here in surrey. I've always thought of it as a more northern thing but not really sure why!

York here, its 4th Nov for Mischievous Night, or Miggy Night I think we called it 😂 but I am also nervous 30th Oct as I think some did cause trouble then too.

It used to be the night before Halloween 30 years ago but nobody bothers much about it anymore.

Sorry, that would be helpful wouldn't it? I'm in Middlesbrough.

DonaldDucksTowel · 01/11/2018 10:14

I've never heard of this
I'm in Manchester and certainly isn't a thing here
thank god it sounds bloody stupid

happypotamus · 01/11/2018 10:14

I have never heard of that before, grew up and living in various parts of the Midlands, but there are shops round here with official signs from the Police saying they are limiting the sale of eggs and flour to young people (doesn't specify how young). I have only seen the signs in the past couple of weeks so thought they were related to Halloween but maybe there is some sort of Mischief Night that I don't know about.

MrsSpenserGregson · 01/11/2018 10:15

Ive never heard of it (south coast). It sounds fun though!

Although I wouldn't have described what Guy Fawkes got up to as merely mischief - was it his supporters who implemented Mischief Night?!

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 01/11/2018 10:15

Looks like you're in the right part of Middlesbrough then!

Oh God Shock yeah, well, this is clearly proof that I live in my own bubble. Grin

Mischievous night is also the 4th November and I'm from West Yorkshire.

HidingFromMyKids · 01/11/2018 10:43

I'm also in West Yorkshire and think of mischief night as Nov 4th.

The 2006 film mischief night is set in Leeds and is a very similar style to shameless. A very northern film, I didn't realise mischief night wasn't country wide.

ChanklyBore · 01/11/2018 10:44

4th Nov

And known as mischievous night rather than mischief night.

ChanklyBore · 01/11/2018 10:46

Miggy night also familiar though I haven’t heard it in years.

The shops here have already been restricting sales of eggs and flour for a week or so. Shaving foam and silly string type stuff has similar restrictions, and I think toilet roll.
