Forgot how thick I am.

Doing a training course for work, before I sign up I have to do a maths and English assessment.
The English was fine but my god the maths. I'm OK with most of it but just been reduced to tears over fractions. My brain just cannot understand them, improper fractions, simplifying them, converting them to percentages, aaarrgh!
I see no need for them in my life and it's all just brought back hideous memories of school. I feel so stupid.

They can be a right pain if you've forgotten how they work. Have you tried BBC Bitesize, it's an absolutely brilliant resource and should hopefully see you flying through it all.

Don't feel stupid, I've got some quite high maths qualifications and struggle with stuff like this until I've had a refresher of the rules and done some simple work again.

MrSlant · 31/10/2018 22:54

Bitesize fractions you can go up and down a level from this, these are GCSE level.

wheresmyhairytoe · 31/10/2018 22:56

I arched the video explaining them 4 times. My brain just doesn't compute. DH has got frustrated at me and I've thrown my pen across the room 😂
I only got a D at GCSE many moons ago, I really hope I don't have to try and do it again, I'd definitely fail.

Would Hegarty Maths help?

Bowchicawowow · 31/10/2018 22:57

Sounds like you have dyscalculia.

wheresmyhairytoe · 01/11/2018 11:38

Thanks, will look into those websites.

I don't think it's dyscalculia, I can do other stuff in my head, it's just fractions I cannot do no matter how hard I try.

I have dyscalculia and suffered the horrors of maths lessons for 11 years without understanding or learning a thing.
I have never since then needed to know any maths beyond simple arithmetic. Let Google do the calculations for you. It’s nothing to do with stupidity, just the way your brain works.

RebelWitchFace · 01/11/2018 18:02

What do you struggle with the most? There is a lot covered in fractions and it can be pretty overwhelming looking at it as a whole.

Would it be easier if you looked at them as division(you say you're good at other stuff in your head) ?

Bowchicawowow · 01/11/2018 18:32

People with dyscalculia find some maths problems OK and others practically impossible.

wheresmyhairytoe · 01/11/2018 18:38

I can't do long division either, can do long multiplication but have never been able to grasp the division.
With the fractions I'm fine if it's the same bottom number but when they have a mix I can't get it, nor when it's the improper ones? Then converting them into decimals etc throws me.
I did the functional skills thing and it said I'm working at level 1, my kids are cleverer than me. This is why I've avoided extra courses for years 😢

I’ve got to do this too to gain access to a course at work.

I hate maths with a passion , I freeze at the sight of numbers especially under pressure.

RebelWitchFace · 01/11/2018 19:06

PM me if you want and I can try and help out. Division and long division skills would be helpful though, especially for percentages.

Disclaimer I'm not a teacher or a maths whizz.
