Has anyone been to Georgia (the country)?

Posting for hopefully more traffic than the travel forum...

DH has OK’d my taking DS(17 in May) away for a few days next summer. I’m thinking 4 or 5 nights and want somewhere really quite different. DS immediately volunteered Tibet or Borneo Grin but both are too far/impractical for a short trip.

Back in the 80s I spent time travelling around the former Yugoslavia when it was still relatively difficult to do so. I’m wanting that sort of feel - away from traditional tourist places but safe enough that DH won’t spend the time not sleeping for worrying about us!

At the moment I’m leaning towards Tblisi, Georgia because it seems to be quite a nice little city and it has several interesting places to go to as day trips. Plus I love Georgian food!

Possibly a bit of a long shot, but has anyone ever been?

I've been. Desperate to go back to be honest -!it was an absolutely magical trip. Some of the most surreal experiences, best food and wine, and most beautiful music. Scenery to die for and churches in gorgeous honey coloured stone (like Bath) carved all over with almost Celtic patterns.

Georgia is gorgeous! I was there with work (tourism) in the 80s not long before the break-up of the USSR. Sadly my recollection isn't as crystal clear as it could be but everyone else's endorsements are bringing back lots of good, albeit hazy, memories. Mostly the feel and look of Tbilisi and that bread!
Was in Lvov around the same time and it too was lovely. Did a lot of travelling around and those two definitely stand out. Should be a really good trip - enjoy!

Drove from Baku to Tbilisi and back in 1999. Border crossing was a bit hairy at the time (lots of scams and corruption) but stunningly beautiful, friendly country, would love to go back. Joanna Lumley went to Georgia in her Silk Road program recently if you need more inspiration.

I translated a documentary about Georgia once, it's been on my list to visit since then. It looks fascinating.

I visited Tbilisi and loved it! Friendly people and amazing food. I found the city the epitome of faded grandeur and wonderful to wander around. I will definitely see more of the country in future.

We flew out via Istanbul and then went back to Moscow. You can make a little tour of it rather than just transiting. Tbilisi airport is tiny though, when we flew home it was just our flight and one to Paris leaving that afternoon so choice isn't huge.

Thanks anzu66 I’ve just read that whole thread and it looks great!

I discussed it with DH/DS last night and we’re all agreed I can take DS next summer. Grin
