Should I be concerned DS hasn’t lost any teeth yet?

This seems like such a stupid problem to be worried about but DS will be 7 in April and hasn’t had so much as a wobbly tooth. Kids as young as reception seem to be losing theirs but he is year 2 and... nothing?!

Is this normal? Thanks for any replies

watching with interest as my DS is in exactly the same situation. He turns 7 in April too.

anyideasonthis · 31/10/2018 12:01

Same here! Already 7. Dentist said he is happy to wait another 12 months....

Millipedewithherfeetup · 31/10/2018 12:02

My dd was the same...but once the bottom two started to wobble the rest followed quite quickly as far as I can remember...still had a few hangers on till 11 or so I think !

DS was 7 a couple of weeks ago - still has all his baby teeth and no wobblers. DD was just 7 when she started to lose hers. iirc my friends ds was nearer to 8 when he lost his first tooth, I think they'd almost given up.

Dentist didn't seem concerned when we saw him. It bothers Ds though that the tooth fairy hasn't been yet.

OhOk · 31/10/2018 12:09

It bothers my DS too. He’ll have stopped believing by the time he loses them at this rate!

Good to know other people are similar. I suppose I am concerned there is a reason the adult ones aren’t pushing their way out.. he is due a trip to the dentist anyway.

When did your DS get his teeth as a baby? It is generally believed that there is at least some correlation between when children get teeth and when they lose them. (This has come from my dentist by the way - not just some random on the internet.)

It certainly seems to be roughly the case with the DC in my family. Just one example: My eldest got his teeth fairly quickly and always in batches - started at 5mths and got his first 8 within 8 weeks so by 7mths he had the full set of front teeth. (Second batch came in at 15mths and again - 8 teeth in 8 weeks. Last 4 came through in a few weeks just after his 2nd birthday) My niece who is the same age, by contrast, didn’t get her first tooth until she was 11mths and got them much more slowly. DS lost his first tooth at 5.5 and again, lost them fairly quickly. He had lost all 20 baby teeth by 11. (Average is 12-14) Niece didn’t lose any until she was 7.5 and at 13 still has a few to go.

We can see similar patterns with our 3 other DC and my siblings would say the same about their DC.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 31/10/2018 12:16

Sorry - that should have said he’d lost all 20 before he was 11. (Think the last one came out about a month or so before his 11th birthday)

OhOk · 31/10/2018 12:17

Wow Tami that’s really interesting, but I can’t really remember when he got his teeth! Blush which suggests it wasn’t particularly late or early I guess

DD is the same!

I also didn't loose any until year 6 then lost 4 front ones in the summer before secondary school. I looked hilarious in my year 7 photo with my gappy mouth. It was embarrassing at the time but I soon got over it!

Also I don't think it had anything to do with when they got baby teeth. DD got hers very early but still has lost no teeth.

Juanbablo · 31/10/2018 12:21

Ds1 was almost 7 before he lost his first tooth. He lost 8 quite quickly then didn't lose any for 2 years and has had a spell of losing them again and there's not many left to go now.

Bunnyhop1502 · 31/10/2018 12:21

In contrast I lost my last baby tooth when I was 15. My party trick was slotting straws through the gap and downing pints!

anyideasonthis · 31/10/2018 12:23

We discovered my DS had a hole in his heart (from birth) when he was 6 yrs old. It was fixed immediately as he was suffering what we had thought was asthma. He was generally a bit breathless and although super energetic, he would 'flop' quickly. Basically he was struggling to get enough oxygen in his blood supply. As a baby he would often get bad chest infections. He was v pale too! The dentist hinted that this may be the cause of his teeth taking a long time to fall out... the blood flow to his teeth was low on the priority list so they are not very strong/ developed. I don't mean to scare you! He is fine now! But perhaps worth knowing?

3boysandabump · 31/10/2018 12:26

My dc were late teethers. Eldest ds didn't get his first tooth until after his first birthday.

He didn't loose his first milk tooth until he was 8.

I lost my last milk tooth when I was 17.

I'm happy because once the adult teeth come in that's it they're there for life so if they aren't fantastic brushers etc it matters.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 31/10/2018 12:26

My DS was late getting his baby teeth and also late loosing them. My DD is 3.5 years younger but she was losing her teeth almost at the same time as DS.

It’s worth having a dentist checkup with an x-ray just to make sure that the second teeth aren’t trying to come through before the first are gone. When I was a child I had to have most of my baby molars removed as they wouldn’t fall which was making my second molars try to come down through my pallete.

Lexilooo · 31/10/2018 12:29

I didn't lose my last baby tooth until I was in year 11! Lost the first at the end of yr 2. I did have to have some removed by the dentist as they didn't come loose on their own but it was fine. Don't worry, holding on to the baby teeth for a bit longer is generally a good thing, those adult teeth have to last a lot of years!

Xiaoxiong · 31/10/2018 12:33

DS is nearly 7 and has only lost 1 tooth so far, no others wobbling at all. I had my last milk tooth removed at 14 when I got braces which is apparently also completely normal.

Our dentist said that 7 is just the average age for first tooth to be lost - it can be a couple of years on either side. And they care more about the order that teeth are lost in, they generally want to see the front 8 (4 top, 4 bottom) lost first before any molars start falling out.

Beingginger · 31/10/2018 12:37

Ds2 was 7 when he lost his first tooth and he lost 8 that first year.
DD is 12 and is still losing hers, I think she has 6 molars left to go.

KhaleesiTheDeadWalker · 31/10/2018 12:41

I lost my last 'baby' teeth at 16! I wouldn't worry, they'll come out when they're ready!

Blondie1993 · 31/10/2018 12:44

DS will be 7 in December and hasn’t lost any yet either 🙈

MrsTumbletap · 31/10/2018 13:00

I lost my last baby tooth in year 7 of secondary school, and towards the end of the year. So still having them that late isn't that strange.

I have great teeth now.

whatsitallabout1 · 31/10/2018 13:06

My ds is 12 and has only lost 6 I think, and didn't lose any until 9 or so. He had a double row on the top for a while. Dentist sent him for xray to check adult teeth were actually present underneath and they are. He referred us on to someone else who took one look and said it was still absolutely within normal and to basically buggar off and wait for them to fall out...

ineedaholidaynow · 31/10/2018 13:10

DS's teeth were late coming out, think he still has some to come and is 13. They take ages as well once they started to wobble. He also had a row of double teeth for awhile (as did DH when he was a child)

Azelma · 31/10/2018 13:14

My DS was also a fairly late teether and didn't lose his first tooth until a couple of days before seventh birthday.

Now 7 years, 9 months and has lost the four front teeth.

blueskiesandforests · 31/10/2018 13:14

OhOk I didn't lose any baby teeth til I was 7 and my teeth are incredibly strong - milk and adult. I go to the dentist regularly and have never had a filling (I'm in my mid 40s). My dentist said it's highly unusual not to have needed any dental work by my age.

I hope my kids will be the same - certainly they all lost their first baby tooth at 7 and none have needed any fillings yet - teen, pre teen and junior school, so obviously its normal not to need any yet!

My teen does have a wobbly tooth though, which is a little amusing - I lost my last milk tooth (further back so it didn't really matter) at 17 and just chucked it in the bin Shock

OhOk · 31/10/2018 14:46

Thanks for all the replies, I will stop worrying now but still mention it at his next dentist visit. I also have really good teeth despite not looking after them very well, so fingers crossed he will too (but we do look after his well!)

Hopefully when he hits 7 they will start to fall out as he is always disappointed when one of his friends loses a tooth
