what time do your primary dc actually go into school?

I'm asking because at DD1's primary school the morning bell goes at 9am. The children then line up and wait (usually several minutes while the staff amble over from the staffroom) to be let in - but sometimes the doors aren't opened until 9.05, then of course they all have to troop in line by line, so it's close to 9.10 by the time they're all in the building.

I realise that staff are busy but it grates slightly when the doors are flung open mere seconds after the 3pm bell goes and they all come charging out with coats/bags already on.

I know that when I went to school we went in at 8.45 and then we'd be at our desks ready to start lessons at 9. But then I am from the past where we did things differently.

I want to email the head about it. Should I? Or am I being a twat? I know it's only primary school but feels like they're missing a life skill (i.e. turning up ten minutes before your shift starts so you can get your things away and go to the loo etc and then start work on time, not rocking up at the time you're supposed to start work and then fanny about for fifteen minutes putting makeup on I'm looking at you new girl from work)

Gates open 830 and close at 840. They go straight in to classrooms for early morning review of yesterday's work.

There are 4 primaries along the same (long) road and they are on a staggered start with the last one in difference to the above being the private that opens gates at 09.15. They finish way later though.

Children are supposed to arrive at school at 8.50. All the literature sent through before starting stated this and explained how important it was to not be late.

In reality, we are lucky to be in the classroom before 9.05

They line up at 8.45. Doors close at 8.55 so anyone who arrives after that have to go through reception and sign in.
Finish at 3.15, although aren’t usually out until 3.20.

MsJac00 · 31/10/2018 14:10

I am a teacher we collect kids at 8.50, lessons start at 9.00

LBOCS2 · 31/10/2018 14:47

Our school allows the children in at 8.45 and the doors close at 8.55 for lessons.

This. Register is taken at 8.55, if you're not in and answering by this time, you are officially Late.

liquidrevolution · 31/10/2018 14:57

The infant school is doors open 8.40, all kids in by 8.55, gates shut at 9 then gates open at 3pm, kids out at 3.10. DD is in breakfast club and they get walked across the pedestrian crossing from the village hall directly opposite at 8.45 prompt.

The Junior school is a bit of a walk away down a heavy traffic road with a narrow pavement so they start later and finish later to accommodate those with kids in both schools.

cakesonatrain · 31/10/2018 14:57

Doors open at 0830, younger year groups go straight in, the older ones line up until the head judges that enough of the little ones have gone in that the trampling risk has reduced to acceptable levels, and he lets them in. Usually a couple of mins max.

Hometime is staggered by year group, from 3.15 to 3.30, but classes often come out 5+ mins late. Never early.

Gettingonwithlife · 31/10/2018 15:07

Straight into class 8.30 and start work registration 8.45.

Gettingonwithlife · 31/10/2018 15:10

We used to have to line up it was awaste of time. Now straight into class no waiting in the play ground in all weathers

user1981287 · 31/10/2018 15:13

Independent school. Playground drop off from 8am. Lessons start at 8.40

AlexanderHamilton · 31/10/2018 15:15

Mine are in secondary now but at primary playground was supervised from 8.30am. The whistle was blown at 8.45am & the children lined up. Usually all in the building by 8.50am.

JacquesHammer · 31/10/2018 15:29

Now straight into class no waiting in the play ground in all weathers

I hate the idea of the line up in all weathers. A couple of local schools do it and it was miserable driving past seeing them all getting soaked.

DD’s simply opened as soon as kids started arriving if it was poor weather, I must admit I did like the line up system as all teachers in the school came out for 15 mins every morning to speak to parents.

Gizlotsmum · 31/10/2018 15:34

Doors open between 8:45 and 8:50. Gates are locked at 9 and kids considered late. Kids go straight in so no delay once the doors are open. Home time meant to be 3:15 rarely out in time

HopeGarden · 31/10/2018 15:53

Doors open 15 mins before registration, kids go straight through into classrooms.

Parents are expected to take the younger ones in, and older children are expected to take themselves in.

The teachers have morning tasks set out for children to get on with until registration - colouring sheets, maths, writing etc, and the teachers / TAs often do a bit of reading with children in that 15 minutes.

Doors are locked at the official registration time and then any children arriving after that have to be signed in at the office.

Yerroblemom1923 · 31/10/2018 15:57

Kids have to be lined up ready to go in at 8.50am. 10 min register called/quiet reading. 9am lessons start. Day ends at 3.15pm .

00100001 · 31/10/2018 16:04

Why are you hanging around for so long??? Confused

I used to arrive, take them into the playground when wee, or just watch them go into the playground and then go home. Why waste 15-20 minutes just standing around watching them run around like loons, line up and be taken in?

murmuration · 31/10/2018 17:32

Ours is like yours OP. The bell rings at 9am and they all line up (4 lines, in their houses). The teachers don’t come out until 5 past, if that. Then they wait and examine the lines, and they’re let in neatest/quietest first. But end of day is similar- DD doesn’t emerge until 10 min past the bell.

Why I wait: the school has emphasised there is no supervision until the bell. Lots of parents do leave, but I’m not comfortable leaving her to the mill of kids on her own - still very young and I’ve seen things I’m not happy with (kids trying to scale the building, for example). I rarely wait for them to go in, leaving as soon as I can see a teacher. Sometimes i leave at the bell if I’ve got time pressure, but the kids can still act up in those 5-10 min, so I prefer to stay.

thefishwhocouldwish · 31/10/2018 18:16

From 7.30, school starts 7.45, registers close at 8. They finish at 2.30.

Idontmeanto · 31/10/2018 18:26

We have infants and juniors on different sites so the littles go in at 8.45 and the older ones at 8.50, giving parents five minutes to get between the two. The pick up times are staggered too.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 31/10/2018 18:31

Doors open at 8.40 and close at 8.50.

Soubriquet · 31/10/2018 19:01

Gates open at 8.45.

They are expected to be in the classroom for 8.55

Parents are not allowed to take them in either. It’s a drop and run at the gate thing though you have to go through another gate first

4forkssake · 31/10/2018 19:10

Separate infants & junior school. Infants go in at 8.45 & you have to wait in the yard with them. Juniors, gates open 8.30 for drop off & leave. Kids in yard til 8.50 then line up to go into school. Anyone turning up after 8.50 has to go through the office & anyone in after 9.05 gets a late mark so assume that's when the registers been done.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 31/10/2018 19:16

Our primary the school rings the bell at 8:45 and the kids just go in. No lining up or waiting for the teacher, just in they go.

OhFlipMama · 31/10/2018 19:20

Around 8.45/8.50
