Extended breastfeeding- when did your toddler self wean?

DS is nearly 2 years old. I'm wondering if he's likely to self wean soon or if I need to start weaning him myself.

How old was yours if they self weaned?

I know people whose 3/4/5 year olds are still wanting to BF. Don't assume at 2 yours will just wake up and stop.

A few mums I've met at LLL said the plasters over the nipples trick worked.

I cut both mine off on their third birthdays. I felt a little bit mean, but I used the birthday as an excuse (although, my dd reasoned with me in a very serious tone: "You're turning three, so you're too big for milk" "Mama, we're going to have to get you bigger boobies" ) They both would have happily continued at bedtime, but they also weren't overly concerned and after a couple of nights, they just seemed to accept it.

Mine was 3 years & 3 months. She’s had some encouragement from me though. She announced one day that she’d feed for 3 more days & then counted down & sure enough, the 4th day she said she didn’t need it as she was done.

DD1 was about 2.5 and DD2 stopped the week she turned 3, but both of them were only feeding at bedtime (and DD2 at various points in the night) since they were 1ish and not every bedtime as I am often at work at bedtime/ overnight.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/10/2018 08:37

Both of mine were around 3.5 - DD needed some "encouragement" however, while DS stopped gradually of his own accord.

4 and a half. Big drop off in feeds at 4, to just falling asleep boob. Still needing boob to fall asleep but very occasionally coming off and falling asleep solo, then like magic 2 weeks or so after school started suddenly not needing boob

2y 8m and I think that was only as I was pregnant again.

Shmithecat · 31/10/2018 09:35

3 years and counting 😭😭

Choosegopse · 31/10/2018 09:36

Had to put my foot down aged 6!

monkerina · 31/10/2018 09:37

2y4m, he'd been down to just a bedtime feed (and occasional feed to sleep but it wasn't really working any more) for about 6 months

I guess I'd better start developing a weaning plan then 😃👍🏼

Thank you everyone
