Slimming World with ED and PCOS- yay or nay???

cryhardandswim · 30/10/2018 18:47

I have suffered with BED (binge eating disorder) for a long time- since childhood and also struggle with PCOS, EUPD/PD, CPTSD, Sleep apnea and a disabling movement disorder called Dystonia.

I am 24 stone and very big. I eat to cope. Seeing a therapist for the CPTSD and PD and doing Overeaters Anon for my BED. I have made some good progress with OA in past but am struggling again, due to some emotional issues.

I am in an art class and today my teacher was asking me how I cope health wise with clocks going back. I said I do struggle with winter- I said I eat more and feel sluggish. She recommends Slimming World and there is one near me. She did say we can eat loads of carbs but no fat. This contradicts advice I have been given by my dr and OA who tell me my issue is sugar and carbs and that I need small amounts of fat in my diet.

Also surely this is outdated advice? Yet SW has loads of peopl elosing weight and it seems to work.

SO...has anyone on here done SW and kept the weight off??? Also, did you feel hungry a lot?

I've done slimming world on and off for 10 years. Most I lost was 5 stone. I now weigh the same as when I first started. It is no different to any other diet out there in that the research suggests long term it doesnt work.

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole if I was you. There is little emphasis on portion control (in fact Muller lights recently became syns becasue people were eating loads every day since they were free food). If you already have the propensity to obsess over food then this will make it worse.
And you're right that fat is the demon on SW which means there's an over reliance on low fat foods full of sugar and other crap.

Check our rebelfit on Facebook. I've just started following and it looks promising.

I second Rebelfit. It’s very supportive and the focus is resolving issues round food and becoming healthier, not weight loss for its own sake.

I didn't have a diagnosed ED until well after I did SW for the first time, I think it was definitely a contributing factor to fucking up my thought processes around food.

Definitely avoid if you can, the probably short term loss will do nothing to help your BED.

Slimming World won't allow you to join if you have an eating disorder. That's not to say that people don't declare it and join, but I don't think the SW ethos would help with your food issues.

My Mum did Sw for a while..she is Diabetic and the advice the consultant gave her went against all Diabetic advice. She kept telling my Mum she could eat as much fruit as she wanted and insisted she knew best when challenged

Give it a miss

Thank you fror your replies. I had a chat with my OA sponsor a few minutes ago and she really thinks that diets are best avoided. I worry about getting caught into a diet mentality again.

Thank you :)

You'll find a way, I've only just seen rebelfit after others mentioned it and it looks pretty good actually.

Personally I'm seeing a new therapist for issues with weight and depression and I've dropped a stone in the last 3 months without dieting at all so there are ways but definitely dealing with the underlying problems are the biggie.

Don't really have any advice accept definitely don't waste your time and money on slimming world. It's not a healthy way to lose weight. I went to 3 meetings and stopped going. The leader insisted on knowing why, when I told her that I didn't think the diet was healthy and the reasons why, she was not happy. She was actually obese herself, quite a bit heavier than me. Good luck I hope you get some good advice that helps.

Ignore all the lazy shite about muller lights and binging on carbs.

Slimming World is healthy unprocessed low fat cooking where you don't have to worry about counting the size of your normal meals and therefore don't have to go hungry.

You can have fat in your diet because you can have as many eggs as you like and small amounts of milk or cheese, you can also have unlimited 5% fat mince as long as you also eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

The idea is to make normal meals using lean meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, salad, eggs, pulses, rice, pasta, small amounts of dairy and bread but without using fat and then strictly limit unhealthy food like crisps, chocolate, alcohol, biscuits etc. IE, a healthy balanced diet. Or if you don't want to cook, there are SW branded ready meals, which aren't great, but are just normal ready meals like chilli, curry etc but fit in the SW rules.

BarbaraofSevillle

10 years of slimming world and I've yet to meet a single person who doesn't become overly obsessed with food.

The OP already has a poor relationship with food as it is... slimming world will not improve that.

I agree some of the principles of slimming world are good which is why I've been on and off it so many times but ultimately it still demonizes some foods over others and to recomend it to someone with an eating disorder is down right dangerous.
