Help me feel better and tell me about your disastrous job interviews.

Recently named changed but am a regular poster, naice ham, elderly Korean Lady, cancel the cheque etc.

I went for a job interview yesterday. It was a disaster in that it quickly became apparent that I did not have any of the skills I was looking for. Basically they'd advertised for an administrative type role, with a salary to match, but wanted someone with a data analysis background. I am pretty cross given how much time I wasted in the process. I checked the job advert which had bullet points of what the role entailed (a very long list) and there was no mention of the key skill they were looking for.

It was quite humiliating to have the interview cut short, even though I'm pretty sure it wasn't my fault!

Anyone else had job interview disasters?

That’s their fault, not yours! If anybody calls or emails you to follow up, I would definitely feed back to them what you have said here.

I honestly wouldn’t worry about it at all - I have had similar experiences with interviews where they are clearly looking for something completely different to the original job spec!

SuperstarDJ · 30/10/2018 12:42

I wouldn’t worry about it. If they were looking for a particular higher level skill that they didn’t advertise for I’d imagine that the majority of the interviews went the same way.

I walked into an interview once and the chair of the panel was a guy I'd had a one-night stand with the night before

I'd only been able to get home for about 10 mins for a really quick change.

Takes the advice of imaging the panel naked to a whole new level - I could still smell his aftershave on me.

I've seen this before when employers want a particular skill that may necessitate a higher wage than they want to pay. It's definitely not your fault and is just them wanting something for nothing iyswim.

I have had some disasters in my day. I remember on in particular where I was being asked questions like I was on a quiz show and no matter what I said it was not the right answer!

SparedByThanos · 30/10/2018 14:00

Oh my goodness @MissCalifornia that would have been horrific!

And yes @Tumilnaughts they even said they had been outsourcing the work to an external consultant who was charging them a lot of money. I had to bite my tongue to not point out that there was a reason for that!

Did you get the job MissCalifornia? Smile

Rayn · 30/10/2018 14:14

It wasn't a school was it? I went for a admin job and when I got there they did a test on data analytical skills although that was not what was advertised! I did not get it 😩

Tumilnaughts · 30/10/2018 14:34

Well on the off chance you're offered the job (as you don't seem confident you will be) make sure to negotiate the wage to something more fitting for the duties!

MissCalifornia · 30/10/2018 15:51

It was pretty horrific for both of us, he went pretty pale when he saw me walk in. Fortunately we'd had pretty regular, nice, mutually beneficial sex so no worries on that front. No risk of sitting face-to-face with penetration man Grin

I was offered the job but I'd actually lined something else up in the meantime so I swerved that one.

MissCalifornia · 30/10/2018 15:51

Lots of "pretty" in that post Confused

My husband had an interview straight after graduating from university that was awful. The week before his interview we had been chatting and I had mentioned that many Germans were initially at least happy with Hitler as a leader as gave strong leadership etc and not aware of the atrocities. When my husband was asked can you give an example of a good leader? His mind went blank and gave Hitler as his answer. Needless to say he didn't get the job.

I had an interview at a car sales place. I thought I had been transported back to the 70's when Manager interviewing said to me "We work long hours, are you sure your partner won't mind you getting home late" and some other similar comment.

They also tried to get away with paying only £2.50 per hour as I would be classes as an apprentice.

This was only 6 years ago and I was 26ish.

His sidekick visibly boaked when he saw that I had just left a role as an employment paralegal and what they were asking was basis for a discrimination claim....
