Spotting before period

Posted this in the fertility section but got no responses. So posting here hoping for abit more traffic.
I just wondered if anyone has been in a similar position and if you found out the reason. It took us two years to conceive DD my cycles were very irregular and I did use to regularly spot before periods. The doctor wouldn't refer me as they said I have be ttc for at least two years.
Now hoping to start ttc again, however, I'm convinced something is not right. I am spotting 5/6 days before my period starts and my cycles are becoming longer. I'm not on any form of contraception but definitely not pregnant.
I feel I get no where with the doctors as they don't seem to know much and won't refer me.

I'm not TTC OP so don't have any perspective on that but didn't want to read and run in the last few years I've had exactly this, the spotting before a period. It's as though it takes it 3 or 4 days to 'get going'.
Are you up to date with smear tests? My periods started getting more painful at the same time this all started and the GP sent me for a transvaginal scan to check for ovarian cysts. Turns out I had a few. (perfectly normal apparently but can play havoc with your cycle) so it was put down to that. I'm waiting to see if they clear up by themselves and will repeat the scan in a few months.
My GP certainly seemed to think it was a non event and pointed out periods change as you age/with stress/hormone imbalances/things like anaemia etc.

I find with GP's the only way to get things done is to say you'd like to be referred, state why, and ask them politely to action that. Hope you find an answer.

Thanks a lot @dontgobaconmyheart that's really interesting. I definitely need to be more assertive and as you suggest just ask them to refer me. I will book another appointment.
Literally had my smear a couple of weeks ago and that has come back fine.
