What time do your teenagers go to bed on a school night?

Just having a row discussion with dd about "normal" times to go to bed for teenagers. Dd is 18 and in year 13.

When do yours go to bed?

I was generally awake until midnight from 14 onwards.

I had my own flat at 17.
Not once did my dm ring me to tell me to go to bed!!

She's an adult.

I'm interested in what time today's teenagers (who are at school) go to bed.

Adult in legal terms, yes, but not an adult in many other ways.

It is easy to say she is 18 and an adult, but if she is doing A Levels, I think you have to send her to bed by 11 ish on a weekday and let her stay up Fri/Sat nights. Or by 10 pm if she has to get up early to get on the school bus if it is a long trip to school.

People forget that when you are an adult you eventually learn and send yourself to bed at a decent time if you have work the next day, this isn't something you do when you are a teenager (generally). They tend to think staying up until 3.00 am and then getting up for the school bus at 7.00 is enough sleep.

This is all very well but if you are up until 3.00 am and then going to school by 9.00 the next morning you will be tired and it is not very conducive to learning.

I'm not sure many 18 year olds have bedtimes.

PantTwizzler · 29/10/2018 10:56

Thanks Tinty, my thoughts exactly.

Agree with Tinty. Although ours are still young teenagers. If they have an early start for school if they havent got any savvier and are living at home I think they need enough sleep so they can function well enough at school and are not so tired that they are a complete arse to live with.

Dad is 15 and I do t tell her to go to bed. She knows if she stays up too late it’s crap so she tends to go to sleep when she’s tired. By 18 I’d expect her to have worked that out and if she hadn’t then it’s uo to her she has to suffer. I certainly wouldn’t be getting in to arguments about bedtime with her.

Aprilislonggone · 29/10/2018 11:23

Ds 17 is always asleep by ten.
He is at college.

dontknowwhattodo80 · 29/10/2018 11:29

DS1- almost 15- goes to bed at 10pm on a school night. He doesn't have a set bedtime during the weekend/school hols, but I would like him in bed by midnight

Almondio · 29/10/2018 11:39

They may be an adult at 18, but still living at home and in full time education means they need to respect house/family expectations, whether that's to do with contributing to meal times, cleaning, tidying, or getting to bed and up at a reasonable time.

DS 15 is generally asleep by 10.30pm on school nights and maybe a bit later at weekends and holidays. As long as it's not negatively impacting his school focus, mood and ability to get up for school, am happy with that.

If he has friends over at a weekend they can work it out for themselves as long as they're quiet after I've gone to bed.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 29/10/2018 11:43

Ridiculously late IMO, early hours and then she can't get up. But what do you do at that age? I can't make her sleep.

awesmum · 29/10/2018 11:47

DD18 when she chooses but generally 11-ish. DS16 when he chooses generally 3am. They do respect the household and keep the noise down as of 9pm anyway. They get up for school /college, work etc without too much stress.

DubiousGoals · 29/10/2018 11:54

DSD (year 9, 14 in a few weeks) goes to bed by 10 with lights out by 10:30
