Surgery on period

I'm due to have surgery on Thursday, on my womb/abdomen and I'm due to come on my period any time now, should I ring and tell them? Will it make a difference? When you change in to your hospital gown they make you take your knickers off, wiill I be able to keep them on and wear a pad?
Also, I'm concerned that when I wake up from surgery and am groggy I won't be able to get out of bed for a good while and my periods are really heavy, how will I change my pad? Stressing me out worrying about it now

Nurses are wonderful. I got mine after a surgery one time and they didn't bat n eyelid helping me with pads.

I'm not too sure about having them during surgery but I'm sure the nursing tem won't mind if you call them for advice.

Try not stress about it though. They are health professionals and have seen it all before.

Best of luck.

It won’t matter at all. Just let them know when you’re admitted - they will give you disposable pants you can put a pad inside and they’ll change it for a fresh one before you wake up. If it’s gynae surgery then they’ll be used to people having vaginal bleeding post op irrespective of having their period. Please try not to worry.

Thanks, really stressing about it 🙈 don't fancy the idea of them putting a catheter in when it's all bloody down there either

Don't worry :) I had brain surgery at the beginning of the year and I was out for about 8 hours. I wasn't on my period when I went under but when I came out I was! I was so embarrassed but they were completely fine with it, they'd put a catheter in and the nurses were great helping me as I was hardly even awake and couldn't even get up to go to the toilet for weeks but they changed my pads for me and even took the catheter out whilst I was still on, helped me shower. I was more squeamish about it than the nurse.

Doesn't matter at all, they put you in disposable knickers with a pad and change it for you until you are able to manage yourself. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, feel less worried about it now

Hey OP.

Surgeons and theatre/recovery staff deal with all sorts of body fluids in theatre.

I had surgery on Friday and had my period. You change into paper pants before going to theatre and can put a pad in. They'll then see to whatever needs doing whilst your under. You'll possibly wake up with new paper pants and a new pad.

Try not to worry about it though, they've see it all and often operate in very messy circumstances!

I have had a lot of down there surgeries and i had my period a few times the nurses don't bat an eye lid just mention it on admission but they probably expect some bleeding or spotting post surgery anyway they will take care of you Flowers
