My first one today. And my instructor's car is having problems so I'm having to go for it on a car I've never driven before! That's going to be an interesting one Confused Any last minute tips?

If you have time, try familiarise yourself with the car.
Hopefully the examiner will have a bit of empathy for your situation.
And good luck

Lottapianos · 29/10/2018 07:53

Good luck!!!!

Can you have a driving lesson before the test in the new car?

Good luck! Feel free to chatter away to the examiner during the test. I talked the ear of mine and it really helped. It was deathly silent in my first test and it only made me more nervous.

You can do this :)

Lottapianos · 29/10/2018 07:54

Sorry, should have said, I'm hoping to be in your shoes in a couple of months, so no advice, but loads of luck!

Gramgram · 29/10/2018 07:56

Good luck.

HannahHut · 29/10/2018 07:57

Good luck! Make sure the instructor is aware of the situation before you head off. Do you still have to do the "show me, tell me" questions in a test because that might prove an issue.

Peanutbuttershake · 29/10/2018 08:00

Thanks so much everyone. I only found out yesterday that I wouldn't be able to go on my usual car so I either had the choice of pulling out or just doing it. I know it's going to be really difficult and I already have issues with anxiety and driving but I'm determined to go this morning and do my best.

Good luck. Your driving instructor should give you a lesson before in the unfamiliar car.

Have a banana before you head off as well.

Oldwestaction · 29/10/2018 08:04

Good luck! Remember a stall doesn't necessarily mean a fail, it's your reaction to it that counts, so stay calm, restart, blind spot check and off you go!
Taking a wrong turn won't go against you either. If you're unsure of what's been said you can ask the examiner to repeat it.
Check your mirrors to what feels like an excessive amount!
If in doubt wait! Don't try squeeze down narrow spaces when there's on coming traffic. I failed my first test on this. Was sure I had enough room and slowed right down but the examiner felt it was unsafe to go.
Get as close to high speed limits as safe. E.g. if entering a 60 zone, you don't need to get right up to 60 but they need to feel a definite change in speed.
Fingers crossed for you!

Didn't pass Sad but it wasn't as bad as I'd thought. Going to book it again soon. Just stupid mistakes from nerves!

Ah bad luck. Don't give up though, out in for your next one right away and have a few more lessons. Focus on what you got marked against.

Gramgram · 29/10/2018 11:11

At least you now know what test conditions are like, and perhaps won't be so nervous next time. Good luck.

Peanutbuttershake · 29/10/2018 12:36

They were such silly things and it was an easy dr ijve. Kicking myself Sad

You will get it, don't give up. I passed this month on my fifth try and I found talking out loud explaining my reasons for doing something 100% helped me not fail. At the end he explained my minors and said he understood exactly why I did what I did as I explained it (I was actually talking to myself not him but he obviously heard) and he knew why I made that decision but if I hadn't he would have thought I didn't know what I was doing and made a snap judgement which I didn't. If I hadn't talked out loud he said it would have been a major but that my narrative explained that I assessed the situation quickly and made my decision based on what was going on around me.

I read that tip on here and am so glad I did it on my last test as I felt that I would have passed on my 2nd attempt if I'd done the same.

' I passed this month on my fifth try and I found talking out loud explaining my reasons for doing something 100% helped me not fail'

This is good to know. I find that I talk to myself on driving lessons and it helps me to focus, but I wasn't sure how well it would go down in the test! I can see why it would help the examiner to understand your reasoning though and may well go in your favour. And well done for passing!

HippoLatte · 29/10/2018 23:47

I probably sounded like a lunatic but I didn't care at that stage @Lottapianos. He didn't mind at all though and it was great to know that it did help me pass :) and thanks!

InterstellarScreamingElla · 02/11/2018 18:34

@Peanutbuttershake Have you booked your next test? I had my first this week but failed. Have rebooked for early December.

@HippoLatte I actually had my first test this week, didn't pass - 3 minors for steering and 1 serious for wrong lane on a roundabout but I talked through what I was doing during my test and suspect that is why I didn't get more minors/serious. Because in lessons my instructor was forever having a go about observations even when I was doing them. I shall talk out loud in my next test!
