Just interested!
Went to see it the the other day and thought a big hand would come out of the sky and shoot a lightening bolt straight at me for enjoying it so much!
Would love others opinions

I'd have thought if you are worried about its blasphemy, you wouldn't choose to go and see it in the first place.

Justawaterformeplease · 29/10/2018 01:24

No but I know an elderly American couple who did. You’d think they’d know what they were getting themselves into though!

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 29/10/2018 01:27

I went with a very open minded friend who actually sat through the whole thing looking like a big circle with three other circles in it.
Neither of us knew what to expect but I have to say I loved it!
The music, dance and talent was astonishing

I didn't know it was a film!

Many years ago I read the book and cross referenced it with the Bible. I thought it was very interesting and well written. That's all.

Didn't convert me! I'm the same as I ever was but it's good to know about different religions (in my opinion).

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 29/10/2018 01:44

Rebecca is it a film? I was referring to the stage musical, it’s really close to the mark. Written by the South Park people

@Rebecca36 I think you need to Google the musical OP is writing on.

negomi90 · 29/10/2018 01:52

@rebecca36 - there's two books of mormon - the religious text and the very blasphamous (but amusing) play.
Apparently a lot of mormons actually approve of the play because its light hearted publicity.

bruffin · 29/10/2018 01:56

I think someone did when ds saw it, but we all adore it, even my fairly religious friends.

The advert in the programme is, "seen the play now read the book" from the Church of the Latter Day Saints

Tomorrow is a latter day😉

I’m a little disturbed to think that poor Rebecca36 is going to google it 😳

I think it actually has a good message, things like fuck you god, well you might not feel that way to Heavenly Father but chances are you haven’t been through what the villagers have. When you hear the songs out of context they are much ire shocking than in context

Brahumbug · 29/10/2018 06:59

Hard to be concerned about the book of Mormon causing offense as it is one of the most self evidently fraudulent books ever written, with chunks lifted straight from the king James bible, complete with translation errors, lol

HarrietBasset · 29/10/2018 09:22

Its my favourite musical Smile
I've seen it a few times and on the last time there were two older ladies waiting in the foyer before the show started and one of them said to the other "i hope there's not lots of bad language as that spoilt the Jersey Boys for me" I couldn't look her in the eye Blush

Wendalicious · 29/10/2018 12:05

Me! I’m a bit embarrassed about it but I went all hot and thought it was going to faint at a particular point! I had a young baby so you prob know which part and I was a hormonal mess, the rest was great I thought x

MistressFunbox · 29/10/2018 12:19

I was uncomfortable. But more because I thought it was horribly racist rather than any of the religious stuff.

lastqueenofscotland · 29/10/2018 12:22

Having lived in Kampala briefly I found it very jingoistic. I know it’s meant to be funny but I hate the assumption that all sub sarahan africa is is starving children, mud huts and aids.

The religious side didn’t bother me at all.

dingdongdigeridoo · 29/10/2018 13:00

It’s certainly an interesting way to learn about Mormonism. The song ‘I believe’ does a good job of teaching you about the religion in a very lighthearted way. I thought the ‘fuck you’ stuff was hilarious. I can’t imagine how pissed off African people must feel when white people go over there and preach to them.

South Park also has a very good episode about the Mormons which is about how the religion was founded. I wonder how many Mormons there are outside the USA, since the religion believes Jesus was American and the garden of Eden was on US soil. It’s all very America focused.

bruffin · 29/10/2018 13:15

Im in Herts

Every saturday morning when i took my dc swimming we would pass two mormons, not the same ones but always two of them.
On wednesday when i had my own lessons the JWs would be camped out at the end of my road. They were not so easy to avoid.

purplemunkey · 29/10/2018 13:20

Jingoistic? I don't think that's what you mean. That means extreme patriotism.

I enjoyed it but agree with others that it was the portrayal of Africans that made me uncomfortable, not the religious stuff.

RockNRollNerd · 29/10/2018 13:25

I thought the point of the portrayal of the Africans was that was how the LDS church view them. The whole show has a big theme running through it about how Mormonism is basically a whitewashing of Christianity (All American Prophet etc)

PeridotCricket · 29/10/2018 13:28

I took a friend to see it who had no idea at all - had just said he'd come along. I thought he was going to walk out. But after the interval he sort of settled into it. In retrospect I should have prepared him!

Brahumbug · 30/10/2018 10:52

Black people and native Americans are inferior in mormonism, native Americans will become white when they are saved by god.

MarshaBradyo · 30/10/2018 10:55

I found some of it too strong (the baby stuff). I’m not religious and I know it’s their humour but I was a bit gnurgh
