I've just got a kindle and can get free books on Prime reading but wondered if it was worth subscribing to Kindle Unlimited too? Thanks x

I have. Did the 3 months for £2 trial and now I just have it. I download maybe 5 books
A week

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 28/10/2018 20:19

I did the three month free trial. I downloaded about 5 books total. I could never find anything I actually wanted to read that was included. It was all vampire sex meets historical romance shit, no matter how I tried to filter.

I just stick with my one free per month with Prime, keep a long wishlist and buy books when they are on offer.

You get a free kindle book every month with prime!! How did I not know this 🙈 how do you get it?

I have it, and love it. I mainly get serial killer / thriller / mystery books along with a few romance series etc. I love the free audio as I get sick if I read on public transport, so listen to them instead.

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 28/10/2018 20:35

Didn't know you get a free book every month with prime!! How have I missed this?

Burlea · 28/10/2018 20:41

I don't have prime, I just go on to the free book lists and I can always find something I like. If it is something I want to read I save in my wish list until it reduces in price. The most I have paid for a book is 99p.

Mindfullness · 28/10/2018 21:18

Do you get magazines as well? Thank you x

no, the books included are crap.

BUT TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS FREE BOOKS WITH PRIME THING PLEASE!!

heatherblue · 28/10/2018 23:55

I've never bothered. I'm signed up for kindle daily deals and manage to keep myself in reading material for an average spend of 99p, I also use this site
uk.ereaderiq.com
You can set up alerts for your favourite authors.

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/10/2018 23:57

How do you get a free prime book?

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/10/2018 23:57

Get readly op it’s great.

JellieEllie · 29/10/2018 00:00

I tried the free trial and as another pp said, there wasn't much that were worth reading other than cheesy romances, period books and not so scary horrors.
I use the one free book per month and then use my prime unlimited too.
I usually browse through the 'recommended for me' 99p books as well and have found some great ones on there. Providing I only spend a £5 per month limit on that and not go over it, works out cheaper.

MyDcAreMarvel · 29/10/2018 00:02

This one free book how do you get it????

JellieEllie · 29/10/2018 00:02

To the ones asking. Go to the 'kindle unlimited' section on your kindle and click a book you like the sound of, you can opt to "read this book for free" but you only get one per month.

Sallystyle · 29/10/2018 00:15

No, not worth it.

I like the free new book a month though.

Pemba · 29/10/2018 01:40

If you are a Prime member there's Amazon First Reads, you can get one free book a month to keep. There's usually a choice of about four books. All new books so you get them before the official publication date. Some are quite good, but there won't be any famous authors:

www.amazon.co.uk/firstreads/?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Then there's Prime reading, and the Prime library, where you get to borrow. There are some magazines included too. All of these and First Reads are for Prime members only.

Kindle Unlimited is a different thing from Prime which you have to subscribe to separately at £7.99 a month. The list of books is bigger than on Prime reading/library, but in general there aren't that many well known authors. Some are good, but in general the books in KU if they were films they would be B movies, IYKWIM. They mix classics in there too, like say Pride and Prejudice to make you think you're getting a better deal, but in general you can find most classics older than about 100 years in free editions to keep on Kindle anyway.

I had a trial of it once, but definitely don't think it's worth it. It would stop me reading books I really want to read, just so I can read more KU books and get my money's worth!

hagsrus0 · 29/10/2018 05:23

If you have access to a public library system you might check to see if they offer kindle books.

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 29/10/2018 08:53

Thank you @Pemba. I agree about the kindle unlimited books. Could never find any I liked. Not worth the money.

GrouchyKiwi · 29/10/2018 08:59

It depends on what you like to read. I'm going through an Urban Fantasy kick right now so KU is absolutely worth it. I read something like 10 books a week (they're all shorter) so it saves me loads. For "serious" literature I'd say it's not. It's also good for thrillers and mysteries.

Dinnaehinksae · 29/10/2018 09:04

I use it, I read about a book a day on average and can't actually remember the last time I bought a book. I mainly read new adult/ contemporary romance and find plenty of good books. Yes you can get magazines, the selection changes often I think. There are plenty bestsellers included in the KU programme.
