I can't believe anybody would dare to go out dressed like that nowdays.

lakehouse · 28/10/2018 20:11

@Plaintree that link is about entertainment and stereotypes. What about drag queens? Also entertainment and outrageous stereotypes of women( who face struggles men don't) Are you offended by them too?

BitchQueen90 · 28/10/2018 20:16

@lakehouse so you personally aren't offended by it. That's fine but you'll find that millions of others are and don't find it acceptable. So if you want to do it then prepare yourself for a negative reaction.

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 28/10/2018 20:22

I'm with @lakehouse with this one, I don't see him as being racist or taking the piss out of black people, I see him as dressing up as a character from a movie.
There is a huge difference between this and the original blackface.

Clinicalwaste · 28/10/2018 21:29

If he was dressed as a woman he would be stunning and brave, no?

SushiMonster · 28/10/2018 21:50

Maybe he self identifies as trans-race?

AtrociousCircumstance · 28/10/2018 21:52

Unbelievable that people are still querying whether this is offensive or not. Of course it’s racist. Fucking hell.

drspouse · 28/10/2018 21:55

Drag is clothing.
This is skin.
Everyone puts on and off their clothing.
Nobody puts on and off their skin.

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 28/10/2018 22:04

A girl on my Facebook posted a photo of her blacked up and dressed as whoopi Goldberg in sister act for a Halloween party. The comments were full of how fantastic it was Hmm

Kay2705 · 28/10/2018 22:15

Still don't know how it's 2018 and people don't know how offensive black face is. Someone's black skin isn't a costume. I'm sure with the wig and the suit people could tell the character he was going as.

GetRid · 28/10/2018 22:28

Crikey, lots of people out there who are just looking for things to be offended by these days. No wonder society is so divided.

The guy was going as a cool character from Pulp Fiction... If a black man dressed up as John Travolta nobody would care one bit.

Everyone needs to stop being offended by things all the time!

mooncuplanding · 28/10/2018 22:30

I'm with @lakehouse

It is a character from a film and the idea is to look as much like them as possible so people can recognise them. Would you expect them not to darken their skin? Because at that point I'd imagine you would then accuse them of being racist too.

Racism is seeing someone as inferior because of their race. This is not racism.

wrongendofthestick · 28/10/2018 22:31

Maybe he self identifies as trans-race?

Languageofkindness · 28/10/2018 22:35

I’m with lakehouse too. I absolutely get the historical issues with this but this is not what the guy was doing at all. Surely it’s intention behind that makes it racist or not. I think save being offended for something that is actually offensive.

Fashionista101 · 28/10/2018 22:35

Woah I'm sorry but this is so new to me. I never knew of the history and how this could be offensive. A couple of my friends are white and we went to a part with them and they dressed up as Michelle and Obama. They just idolise them, not racist at all.

teenagerprob · 28/10/2018 22:37

Agree with lakehouse

Studyinghell · 28/10/2018 22:39

I don’t think black face is wrong in this situation, he was dressing up to be a character, not to abuse any1 in anyway. Just as people dress up as geishas with a white face

rafffy · 28/10/2018 22:39

im with lakehouse too.

language has got it right too.

KennDodd · 28/10/2018 22:57

I remember I saw a documentary about racism years ago and how black people are treated differently. One of the experiments they did was take a few white volunteers and make them look black with makeup and prosthetics. After being dressed up the volunteers were then sent out to live the day being black, they were taken to different parts of the country, some very mulit cultural some very white areas. The makeup artists were excellent and nobody they encountered seemed to be able to tell the volunteers weren't really black. The point of this was to give the white people an insight into being black and if they felt they had been treated differently. How do posters feel about this experiment? I doubt it would be done today.

LuckyDiamond · 28/10/2018 23:02

Is the guy supposed to dress up as a white Samuel L Jackson?

Is it ok if he wears a SLJ mask instead.

Are actual black people offended by the bloke?

LuckyDiamond · 28/10/2018 23:03

Is this ok?

tinatsarina · 28/10/2018 23:08

I don't think it was offensive. Did anyone see white chicks? Any outrage about two black men dressing up and pretending to be white women? No I don't think so.

PenelopeFlintstone · 28/10/2018 23:12

I'm with Lakehouse too. Being offended at this has been imported from the US.
It all depends on the intent.

LEMtheoriginal · 28/10/2018 23:13

Lucky that is disturbing!!Grin

I think if something is possibly going to upset someone then one shouldn't do it. Ergo this guy shouldn't have done it. I don't see someone dressed as Samuel Jackson i see someone dressed as a black man and feel a bit Hmm about it. Also what does pulp fiction have to do with halloween - misses point.

Its not something i would choose to do.

Beansandcoffee · 28/10/2018 23:19

I’m with Lakehouse on this. The guy was in fancy dress as a character from Pulp Fiction. Would have looked odd if he hadn’t blacked his face.
