We're staying in Sling (!) in a cottage, just wondering what you think would be a nice place for a walk? What to see? etc.

Puzzlewood Forest is a must along with Clearwell caves.

Cameron2012 · 28/10/2018 17:56

Symonds Yat, Tintern Abbey, The Enchanted Wood

Yep definitely Puzzlewood. There's a free car park by the Forest holidays cabin place by Berry hill pike from which its a 2 mile walk to Symonds Yat. There's a cafe and pub at the Yat, and cafe at the Forest holidays place so you are totally covered.

Do you have English Heritage membership? I think Chepstow castle is EH. Goodrich and St Breivels are. Tintern Abbey is nice too.

Beechenhurst is also lovely for a walk ... there's a coffee shop too that does lovely meals & cakes.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2018 18:07

The Forest of Dean Sculpture trail makes for a nice walk. IIRC the Cyril Hart Arboretum is nice too.

3secondsfromchaos · 28/10/2018 18:12

Chepstow Castle is CADW (being in Wales) but you might get a discount with EH. Chepstow is lovely for a walk - lots of hairdressers and charity shops but the little gift shops are nice.
Clearwell caves
Sculpture trail at Beechenhurst lodge
So many places to walk and cycle in FOD
Tintern Abbey (also CADW)
Puzzlewood is ace but definitely take wellies - I've seen people destroy their shoes in there even in summer
Monmouth is lovely for a pootle around the shops and for nice restaurants, Mokos and Estero are where we like.
Lots of lovely walks along the river Wye
Lydney has a lovely crafty place called Taurus Crafts - great for homemade food and a cuppa with little shops for craft goodies
Coleford (near Puzzlewood) has a tiny old cinema for a rainy day
Dean heritage centre is nice for history stuff
Littledean Jail - never been...
I'll try and think of more.

The Sculpture trail is fab, and the cakes at Beechenhurst lodge are ace

MorningsEleven · 28/10/2018 21:18

I love the sculpture trail too. The whole area is beautiful. We went there in summer and I'm campaigning to return next year.

42andcounting · 28/10/2018 22:12

Puzzlewood, sculpture trail, Monmouth. I'd give the heritage centre a miss if you're there on half term week, I imagine it will be full of small gruffalo hunters Grin. The globe inn at alvington does slow cooked shin of beef with stilton mash that is almost good enough to make you cry Grin

Puzzlewood
Symonds Yat
Sculpture Trail
Boat trip when your feet get tired

PutItAwayDear · 28/10/2018 22:24

King Arthurs Cave!

Puzzlewood is ok but not amazing IMO.

Taurus Crafts is great as is Beechenhurst.

Fuzzlewuzzle · 28/10/2018 22:31

Symonds Yat East for the viewpoint and saracens Head riverside pub.
Symonds Yat West for Butterfly Farm, Maze, walk by the River, and st Dubricious Church. Old Court Pub near the maze
Woods of Whitchurch is a must too, amazing village shop and coffee shop.
Monmouth, Ross and Coleford are all nearby and worth a look. Enjoy 😊

MulderitsmeX · 28/10/2018 22:31

Chepstow+castle - yes (chepstow museum is also ace)

Have you been to the FoD yet OP? I live here and there are many beautiful places to go for walks and things to see.

ShortandSweet96 · 13/01/2019 22:29

You're actually staying in the village I live in! Welcome Grin
