What have you done as a family or treated your children to, that was just worth every single penny?

Depends on your kids obviously but we were delighted with a Thomas the tank engine experience on a steam railway this summer!

underneaththeash · 28/10/2018 15:54

What age are you children OP?

PoptartPoptart · 28/10/2018 16:17

Holiday of a lifetime. For us it was Florida, but I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea!
The fun we had planning the trip was just as exciting and fun as actually being there. And talking about it fondly for years afterwards, recalling memories, funny stories and looking at photographs still make it worth every penny.

Citylivingwithdogs · 28/10/2018 16:19

Universal in Florida. What’s your budget and age of children?
Having said that, we’ve today been for a dog walk with friends and Sunday lunch and our DC have had a fantastic day.

Aprilislonggone · 28/10/2018 16:20

Stayed on the Isle of Mull to watch dh do the rally.

winterisstillcoming · 28/10/2018 16:22

We love skiing together

Glossymare · 28/10/2018 16:29

They are 12 & 9. Last year we stayed over Legoland in a themed room in the castle hotel. It was totally overpriced but we loved it and our ds’s still talk about it a lot! Planning Florida for 2020. But, I’m getting the urge to book something up sooner to look forward to!

Our eldest went skiing with school last year and loved it! The younger one still feels a bit young though to enjoy it. He’s not a lover of the cold!

Skiing!

It's just such a great family holiday. Might have changed in recent years, but in the Alps there was rarely a phone signal and no internet. We were all in separate classes for the morning and then would meet up for lunch and ski together in the afternoon. So lots of together time but not so much that things got fractious!

Glossymare · 28/10/2018 16:31

That does sound awesome Olly

We went on a Norwegian cruise and on one of the trips kayaked down a fjord. Brilliant holiday.

Alanna1 · 28/10/2018 16:35

I think it depends on the age of your children, and what you are like as a family, but I would say the most memorable experiences for children, especially as they get older, are those which push them a little - a sense of adventure and accomplishment - we learn best when just outside our comfort zone.... That can be in the UK or abroad and for a variety of budgets. Whether learning to surf/sail in UK (or warmer abroad), canoeing, backcountry camping, etc - many options. I also think seeing wildlife in nature is enhancing (over zoos/aquariums/safari parks). But families and children differ, of course.

Panicmode1 · 28/10/2018 16:35

Another vote for skiing. "Best holiday ever" said all four of them when we got back.

As a child, my best holiday with my parents was a safari and then train trip to Cape Town in South Africa.

Ylvamoon · 28/10/2018 16:40

I second skiing! Just a lot of fun.
An other great fun day out geo cashing while on holiday. We went up a mountain, found a 12th century castle (ruin) and a very interesting treasure box. It didn't cost anything, (except for the treasure we swapped), we learned some local history and had the whole place to ourselves. My kids are 7 & 13 -very competitive!

Shockers · 28/10/2018 16:48

Coasteering in West Wales.

Swimming in the sea around Durdle Door.

Walking by a river in the valley when we were on a skiing holiday, then going for fondue.

Solving a labyrinth in the grounds of a chateau in the Dordogne. Kayaking down the Dordogne in the sunshine.

Kayaking down the Ardeche in the sunshine!

Rockpooling in Port Manech when they were little.

Most of our holidays really- too many to list.

JuneFromBethesda · 28/10/2018 16:57

Legoland for us too - we spent a weekend there last year and it was brilliant.

I went on a couple of skiing holidays as a teenager and hated it, so I won't be doing that with my kids!

We had a great day in Brighton last bank holiday Monday - it absolutely poured with rain all day long but we did the aquarium, lunch at Pizza Express and then spent several hours throwing away coppers in the machines on the Pier - it was brilliant. I'd go back there like a shot.

rollonoctober · 28/10/2018 17:03

We took our kids skiing for the first time this year at ages 7, 5 and 1. Obv the 1 yr old didn't ski but the other 2 did, and we had the most awesome holiday ever. Loved it.

samlovesdilys · 28/10/2018 17:06

Definitely kayaking...both on French rivers and Adriatic coast...
Also a day at Harry Potter over Christmas was something they still talk about...

Bunnybigears · 28/10/2018 17:06

We took DS1 and 2 to New York when they were 10 and 7 but very nearly 11 and 8. They absolutely loved it as did we. They are still talking about it regularly a year later.

Kit10 · 28/10/2018 17:20

We just did Disneyland Paris, had a wonderful week, mine are a bit younger it's not up there for the thrill rides. Planning on an Italian road trip (south) and Florida next. Also California is high up my list (when we've won the lottery 😁)

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 28/10/2018 17:34

Harry Potter studio tour - we booked expecting the DC to love it, but not expecting much ourselves (we are too old to have been Potterheads) but we all absolutely loved it, and I found myself getting quite emotional at the Hogwarts model at the end. We'd love to go again.

PoptartPoptart · 28/10/2018 18:13

On a smaller scale, we recently did an escape room as a family. Brilliant fun!

cptartapp · 28/10/2018 18:27

We went to Iceland in January. It was all amazing, but my teens particularly loved the Blue Lagoon and quad biking through the snow covered lava fields. Still seems unreal.

Caselgarcia · 28/10/2018 18:32

Lapland. We went husky sledding, snow mobiling, ice fishing, saw the Northern Lights and stayed in a cabin overlooking a frozen river.
