Nappy rash drama!

So, over a week ago now my son was looked after by a babysitter who didn't realise he had pooed in his nappy. He is teething and so if he's left in it for more than 5mins or so he gets a nappy rash.

I have tried daily baths, some air time, sudocream, sticking to one type of wipes etc. The problem is now he doesn't tell me anymore when he's gone and even runs away when I try to change his nappy, I know this is because he is sore and the nappy rash is mostly gone except for one patch where the skin actually bleeds after a change.

Do I need to take him to the drs? Or could I put a plaster over this small patch that isn't getting better? I am worried this is going to just get worse if he keeps refusing to be changed etc. And is obviously in pain and distress.

I don't understand why most of it has cleared up and this one small patch (1/2 a cm square at most) just keeps getting worse.

What else could I try? He doesn't like going in the bath now because it obviously stings and it is breaking my heart to see him suffering when I change him.

I have some metanium (sp?) but it says not to use on broken skin.

Tia xx

Put a small amount of sudocrem on the patch then a thin layer of metanium on top. I've found it's best to do it when you know they won't poo so after they have done or overnight for example.

Creatureofthenight · 28/10/2018 13:02

I’ve not tried it but heard others say that egg white on the rash works wonders.

bumblebee39 · 28/10/2018 13:06

I will try the sudocream and metanium at his next change. Worried about the behaviour change because he normally shouts for a change or hands me the wipes or nappy as soon as he's gone whereas now he's hiding it and I'm having to check.

Will this get better once the rash goes completely?

Try washing him instead of wipes. Either cotton wool and water or bath / shower. I find spray barrier stuff like cavilon or sorbaderm really good over the bits that bleed.

bumblebee39 · 28/10/2018 13:16

Thanks @bonzo77 will have a look in the chemists tomorrow for some spray.
I have tried bathing or showering him instead but he just screams.
I have tried cotton wool and water but it gets stuck to the worst bit which makes things worse.
He does have a new pack of flannels so might give them a go.

Hate to see him in pain. Honestly it just upsets me so much when he's normally such a happy jolly little person and I know he's cutting all his canines so is in pain from that too.

Just as much air time as possible for starters. Nappy off and stick to areas of the house with wipeable floors for the day.

HJE17 · 28/10/2018 13:36

If there’s a persistent patch that won’t heal it’s possible he has a mild fungal infection. Try the other things that have been mentioned first, but if still no luck after a couple of days you might want to ask the GP about an anti fungal cream (lovely...)

TeddyIsaHe · 28/10/2018 13:37

Fungal infection possibly, or change nappy brand? Dd suddenly had a really bad reaction to the brand we’d always used, changed and it was gone within 2 days.

CupoBlood · 28/10/2018 13:39

The couple of cases of really nasty nappy rash one had as babies was knocked straight on the head by sitting in a dettol bath.

Polkadot1502 · 28/10/2018 14:39

My Dd suffered with bad nappy rash when she was tiny ( it was because she's dairy intolerant ) but I found cotton pads instead of cotton wool works well, with plain water. Still using cotton wool pads now at the age of one because she has flare ups if I use wipes. I usually put loads of Sudo cream on each nappy change when she is sore too. Hope it clears up soon!! Xx

Thanks everyone. Xx

Might be fungal as tbh it looks like one older DC and I had impetigo more than nappy rash at this point and I know that gets in through broken skin... Will give one more day to try some spray and no wipes, then drs Tuesday if still no joy.

Magically improved in the night thank goodness. Sudocream finally did its magic.
