I'm a southerner, dh is a northerner. The right pronunciation IMO is how the people who actually live there pronounce it.

Try living in Shrewsbury! It's one way to weed out the forriners (or local poshuns) when they say Shrowsbury Halloween Wink

how we pronounce Calais (in Maine - it's Callus)
That's how the older generation pronounce Calais, France.

MongerTruffle · 28/10/2018 19:46

(the English-speaking older generation, obviously)

@Stupomax

That's not dissimilar to how the English Haverhill is pronounced by its inhabitants Grin

@letscometogether I feel like all those unusual place name pronounciations need to be said in a Norfolk accent!

Sitranced · 28/10/2018 20:04

Depends which side of the river you're from.

I'm from Baff. Wink

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/10/2018 20:11

Barff. I live just outside the city.
Shouldwestay* I would pronounce Milngavie as Mull-guy (have family in the area)

Ah I do miss the Suffolk accent.

I was born about 12 miles from Bath, and have always said Baaath, though I'm pretty sure my DM (from Yorkshire) used to say Bath, with a short 'a'. There is a village in Northants called Cogenhoe, pronounced Cooknoe.
