What do you do with parents/in laws who stay all day

And don't want to do much or engage with DC?

MIL and FIL are coming for the day and won't leave til 8.30pm.

They live a couple of hours away so, after a long drive, they don't want to go to, say a National Trust property so we just hang around the house looking at each other. We don't have much in common and the day drags.

It would be lovely if they lived closer and we could pop in or just go out for lunch.

Any ideas?

Insist you all play monopoly. That will happily fill up at least 2 hours.

We normally go for a walk, play card games or other games with the in laws when we visit them. We do chat as well - but they want to chat too which doesn't sound like it's the case with your in laws.

How about meeting up at a NT property (say DCs want to see the autumn colours, do pumpkin carving, Christmas decoration workshop - there is always something on for kids at NT) then have lunch there and you go home mid afternoon. ILs can stay on or go home themselves.

I'd go shopping if I were you and leave them to it! Hide in a coffee shop with a good book!

I'd suggest having/adopting a dog/a new baby/gheko, just so you've got something to talk about really.

They must enjoy their visit or they wouldn’t come. Make it less enjoyable - give ‘em the ironing/shoe-cleaning/whatever.
