Isn't it difficult to imagine just how big a wind turbine is?

I know they're huge, but it's so difficult to get a sense of scale, because they're generally so far away. But we've just passed one next to a pylon and you can see just how enormous they must be!

DP is rolling his eyes at me, and has just pointed out that there are no toddlers in the car so I don't have to point out wind turbines and helicopters and horses boring man, so I thought I'd share that with you all instead!

Yep, they are huge when you pass close by them.

usernamealreadytaken · 28/10/2018 09:51

I agree with you; when we moved we found ourselves not far from a wind farm and it was the first time I'd actually been close to them rather than just driving by. I was staggered and awed by the sheer scale. I love them and love walking on the hills near the farm. I know they're not to everyone's taste.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 28/10/2018 09:53

Have you seen the video with the drone footage of the man sunbathing on top of a wind turbine. It's so high up it makes me feel quite sick to watch it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/10/2018 09:53

At first I vaguely thought they'd be similar to windmills — they're really really not!

I haven't zero, I'll look for it!

There are quite a few near me so I'm probably used to them but I don't think they are that big but maybe I've never had to imagine what size they are iyswim

Processedpea · 28/10/2018 09:56

When flying over Europe you can see them quite clearly I really like them they're beautiful in an odd way

That video made my legs shake Shock

Junebug123 · 28/10/2018 10:05

There's a great Windfarm near us with lots of walks. Visitor centre too. If there is something similar near you it's definitely worth a visit.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 28/10/2018 10:06

Me too, it's like those free climbing ones when people are climbing cranes and really high buildings with no safety equipment. They make me feel unwell to watch.

StepMug · 28/10/2018 10:06

They’re building a wind farm near my house. They’ve taken two road islands out to move the parts to the farm. You should see the propellers on the back of a lorry as they drive past little you on the ground. Shock

TSSDNCOP · 28/10/2018 10:11

I think they are rather beautiful.

If you were that man you’d be like “Jesus fuck, even on top of my wind turbine some fucker with a drone is invading my privacy”

wheresmyhairytoe · 28/10/2018 10:16

This is when they put a blade from a turbine in a city centre square

www.google.co.uk/search?q=hull+blade&oq=hull+blade&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l3.3479j0j7&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=kqMtinfEKyvixM:

The sheer scale of it, and that's just 1 blade.

ShatnersBalloonFromPennywise · 28/10/2018 10:20

I often see parts of them being transported, and they are HUGE! They have to close roundabouts to get the massive blades around.

bagpiss · 28/10/2018 10:24

They are literally awesome when you're close up aren't they, I think they're wonderful

twoheaped · 28/10/2018 10:27

I live in a valley with a few dotted around. I actually like them but many of the locals objected to them.
We were considering having one on our land as it can't be seen from the house but our nearest neighbour would go ballistic.

TonicClonicAndTheWaves · 28/10/2018 10:30

Do You Know made an episode on wind turbines, my son is obsessed with watching it over and over. They are bloody massive!

YeOldeTrout · 28/10/2018 11:18

Our local fierce anti-turbine campaign put a pic of the turbine next to our local church and the London Eye (for scale). Distributed images of this to every household in town to sway public opinion. As though the turbine was smack in middle of town next to our church & would completely dominate the town both visually & audibly. Which is what Jo Public concluded.

The proposed turbine was actually 1 mile away from the church/town centre on a field, behind an ugly disused half-dismantled factory (an eyesore still there 8 yrs later). You wouldn't be able to see the turbine from almost all of the town.

If you take ferry into Rotterdam there are huge turbines dotted all around the ports; magnificent. Generating electricity exactly where it's needed.

NewName54321 · 28/10/2018 11:21

If you're ever in Swaffham (Norfolk), there is one you can climb up the inside to a viewing tower near the top. They also have a blade lying down on the ground so you can see who huge it is.

YeOldeTrout · 28/10/2018 11:22

... For me it's just like fracking. People want safe secure cheap electricity which our comfortable modern lifestyles completely rely on. But NIMBY. They don't want to accept any of the environmental pollution or problems of energy generation anywhere near them.

Agustarella · 28/10/2018 11:26

I was shocked by the scale of the demolition works (both proposed and already carried out) needed to situate a turbine in our local forest. It's on publicly owned land that abuts woodland owned by DP, who is furious about the noise and mess and destruction. It's not even in a very windy spot. I'd only seen wind farms off the Norfolk coast, where they presumably look tiny because they are so far out to sea.

soulrider · 28/10/2018 11:29

You know wind turbines come in different sizes....?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 28/10/2018 12:14

I got commissioned to make a model of one. Spent ages on site a windfarm and can confirm they are indeed bloody massive.

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 28/10/2018 12:17

We passed a blade being transported on the most enormous lorry I've ever seen when we were in the south of France. The lorry had numerous escort vehicles and took up a lane and a half of the motorway.
DH and I were both utterly gobsmacked by the sheer enormousness of the single blade and are still unable to comprehend how big a whole turbine must be
