Does anyone here tap dance?

I need to do some excercise but hate the gym. Love to dance but not a lot available where I live and with the hours I have spare etc. I use to tap when I was younger so haven’t done it for at least 20 years. I haven’t tapped since then and I never did the ‘grades’ I juat was in mixed ability etc.

Iv found somewhere and emailed he lady who teaches and she said it’s mixed ability, come and have fun etc but im scared! I don’t want to make a fool of myself! I don’t pick up routines quickly (although once Iv got them I remember them for years) so I don’t want to hold others back. I also have a back that’s quite knackered that I didn’t have when I was younger, will this affect my back? I’m thinking about shockwaves moving up the body... probably over thinking! Also what do you wear?! I don’t have any tap shoes...

Ok so teacher is lending me some shoes!

I’m a little scared it has to be said! I worry my feet won’t move like they should Grin does any one think starting as an adult you could get really good or does it have to be done regularly from being young?

Riveted taps can't be adjusted or replaced and tend to be used on the cheaper shoes. A lot of people adjust the screws on their taps, a bit like tuning drums (who knew?) and it makes them sound better.

Capizio make wider fitting tap shoes. Enjoy!

Yay! I took up tap for the first time in my 40s and love it. I have wide feet and Bloch lace-ups fit me perfectly, I went to a dance shop to try them on as the sizing is weird (mine are 7.5 when I'm 5.5).

So I went! It was good but I could not keep up!!

Well done! Next time you go, then you will find you'll remember some - it takes time for your muscles to develop muscle memory so keep at it! You'll soon start to get the hang of bits and pieces, and it won't be long before it all starts to knit together and you will really feel like you are getting somewhere. It's great fun and really good exercise Smile

Don't let it put you off. You'll pick it up.

I'm going for the first time next Monday - really looking forward to it! I'm really interested in Appalachian clog dancing (yes really) but my nearest troupe is miles away so I want to see if I get on with tap before changing over.

Keep going. It takes time for steps and sequences to filter down. My dance teacher says it takes a a week for it to filter down to our feet. She is right! The number of times I haven’t got something one week only for the next week for it to suddenly to click into place. I find tap the hardest form of dance but so much fun.

Anyone who wants something that is more than a challenge than tap try Flamenco 💃 Grin

Thanks everyone. I need to find a different outfit as I had on ‘yoga pants’ and she told me I should wear short trousers or leggings Blush

Yes you need a clear view of your feet
I wore cropped leggings when I did it
