Wide Slot Toaster - Is Dualit worth it or alternatives to Dualit?

We need a new toaster, and we always said then next one would have wide slots for bagels, crumpets, hime made bread etc. It owed be nice if it actually toasted both sides properly and didn't take about 10 mins as our ancient Swan toaster does.

2 long slots (therefore to do 4 slices) would be ideal, as can we get through a lot of toast in one sitting and don't have room for a big "square" 4 slice.

The Dualit 2 slot long toaster seems to tick all the boxes., but at £100+ if is worth it? Are there others that are as good? Would I be paying for the name with Dualit, or is it actually a better product?

There's nothing like a Dualit toaster does the best toast ever.

Looks lovingly at her 10+ year old one...

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2018 08:43

The is good to hear! I have just hoiked another uncrispy crumpet out of the old toast with a fork because it got stuck

This is the model I am looking at

We bought a second or third hand Dualit off eBay for £15 - it didn't look great but we took it apart, cleaned it and it looks new now. You can get replacement bits for them (again eBay is your friend) and they are easy to fix so maybe look there? Agreed they are great toasters

Taffeta · 28/10/2018 08:50

Funnily enough DH and I were commenting yesterday how reliable and fab our 2 slot 16 year old Dualit is.

Used every day, with cage for hot x buns, bagels, too thin or thick slices of bread etc - it looks as good as new & has never had a problem.

Def worth the £

Taffeta · 28/10/2018 08:54

We have the classic vario 2 slot stainless steel

Not sure I’d pay the ££ for one with plastic

No forks! Get Lakeland magnetic (to stick to side of toaster) bamboo toast tongs - cost £1.50!

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2018 08:59

Ah that is interesting about the stainless steel v plastic Taffeta .Makes sense.

MIL bought us one of those bamboo forks, but dent realise that the outer casing of our current (terrible) toaster is entirely plastic an took it home again. I always unplug the toaster and give it a few mins for the capacitors to discharge before forking it.

I jut gave my dualit toaster back, it was so inconsistent. Sometimes the bread would come out barely warm and sometimes nearly burnt at the same setting.
But yes OP, you are right in that it’s hard to find two x long slot toasters.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 28/10/2018 09:24

I bought this one in store (JL ) for £70 about a month ago ! It is great !

I find currently the most frustrating thing is that bread slices are too long for the toasters.

The only bread that seems to fit lengthways is Hovis.

bellsbuss · 28/10/2018 09:31

I've had my Dualit toaster for nearly 15 years now and it's only just starting to not brown properly. I think they are worth every penny.

mysteryfairy · 28/10/2018 09:32

Don’t buy the lite one, not nearly as enduring...you need the original! On Amazon for £100: here

I have a 4 slot one which seemed like a huge amount of money at time but still going strong and has been in my life longer than DD (who will be 17 in January). There are five of us and toast is my favourite food to give you a sense of usage!

TheBitterBoy · 28/10/2018 09:34

I have had the 4 slot version of that one for about 10 years and it's brilliant. One side went pop about two years in and dualit were great, sent it off for repair and when the fault was discovered they replaced it without charge. This one has had no problems and I'll probably get the same one again when it dies (not actually showing any signs of that yet though!)

TheBitterBoy · 28/10/2018 09:36

Dualit lite I mean

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2018 20:56

Aaaarghh this toaster thing is doing my head in. I fully appreciate that the Dualit Classic is the one to buy. The three slice
Model would be perfect. But £160!

Might struggle on with the rubbish toaster as we also need new pillows and kettle. Maybe I should get married again? Grin

We have a lovely pink Dualit that we’ve had for years and years. If an element goes, it can be replaced. We can do four thick slices at a time.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 28/10/2018 21:23

Our Dualit is 17 years old and still going strong...if someone stole it tomorrow (because I can’t imagine it would ever break!!), we would replace it for the same £140 model immediately. An excellent kitchen item!

didireallysaythat · 28/10/2018 21:48

Please check out eBay - there are dozens that will cost you half that....

Beamur · 28/10/2018 21:52

I've got the cheaper version and it's a good, robust machine that lasted about 10 years.
If I had the money I'd get the better one. They are really good.

Nacreous · 28/10/2018 21:53

I have a Russell Hobbs two slice toaster. Stainless sterl. Was under £35. Wide enough abd tall enough for bagels. Toasts well. Is now 6 years old and survived moving house 20x (not a typo, had to move every term through uni), and living in uni kitchens for 3 years. Then you have £130 spare for a kettle and some pillows...

mysteryfairy · 28/10/2018 22:05

Get a cheapo kettle from Sainsbury. I have pre-tested a variety of expensive kettles for you including Dualit and delonghi and they lasted far less time than a Sainsbury own brand one that went on for years. Then TK Maxx or soak and sleep for pillows...just no compromise on the toaster 🤣

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/10/2018 22:09

I’ve got the classic 4 slice, I got it as a wedding present 20 years ago. Marvellous thing.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/10/2018 22:10

Although, I do get crumpets stuck in it occasionally.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/10/2018 22:18

I have the Dualit classic 2 slice and it's been going strong for over 20 years now. Still looks great and does a fantastic job. It cost me around £100 to buy and that seemed like a small fortune at the time but has worked out at less than £5/year so far. Worth every penny.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 28/10/2018 22:20

I wanted the original but opted for the lite it’s brilliant. Ended up buying a dualit kettle that is how committed I am to this toaster. We have the square 4 slot that you don’t want but it’s the same as the one you linked. You can still get the toastie racks for the lite as well.

BroomstickOfLove · 28/10/2018 22:27

I dithered over getting a Duality, but ended up buying a £17 Morphy Richards toaster which toasts crumpets, bagels, home made bread etc beautifully. I have no regrets.
