Gluten free shampoo??

fluffypuffy · 27/10/2018 15:36

Has the world gone mad?? Just rewatching gbbo and noticed a herbal essences ad professing their shampoos are paraben free, colourant free, and GLUTEN free?

Why on earth would that be an advertising feature for a shampoo? I understand people with wheat allergies can have issues with skin contact but surely that can't be that widespread??

I was wondering this exact same thing thing only yesterday....Confused

Pebblespony · 27/10/2018 15:44

Being gluten free is pretty fashionable and you can't blame them for separating fools from their money.

footballmum · 27/10/2018 15:46

Because it can cause dermatitis for anyone who is coeliac. Coeliac UK estimate that 1 in 100 people have the disease. I have a close friend who has it and has to use gluten free skin products and has had to, at times, spend a lot of money on them so I think it’s great that the general high street brands are getting on board Smile

Thank you @footballmum. As was obvious from my post, I didn't know that and I apologise for being so flippant.

MamaLovesMango · 27/10/2018 17:08

Wow. My best friend has coeliacs and I had no idea she could be affected that way!

kaytee87 · 27/10/2018 17:12

There was a thread on this very recently.

^ what football said

Crazyfrog007 · 27/10/2018 19:02

Meaning no disrespect, but for those of us who are celiac, gluten free is not just 'fashionable.'

Frankly, part of me is glad it has become fashionable so I can now eat what others do and use skin products that don't cause me to come out in a rash all over and itch half my skin off.

Not meaning to get at anyone with this post, but Ive had so many people make me feel like a pain in the arse when I ask for GF. And I've had so many snide comments. It's a very frustrating condition to deal with and deal with other people about.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/10/2018 19:16

Well my daughter has just been diagnosed as coeliac.

Seeing as she can no longer eat 80% of her favourite foods and I’ve just had a very expensive shopping trip to buy expensive pasta, bread, flour, etc which probably tastes shit I can’t imagine many people doing this for fashion/fun.

She doesn’t have skin problems but I’m glad there’s shampoo for the people who need it. I would hazard a guess this shampoo is twice the price of the non gluten free stuff if the food is anything to go by.

WerewolfNumber1 · 27/10/2018 19:18

Some people have actual gluten allergies so severe that they need to use this, because they will have an allergic reaction if any gluten touches their skin.

So yes this is a thing, and is needed by some people.

Rapnoceros · 27/10/2018 20:30

Does shampoo have gluten in it usually?

Or is it one of those things like ketchup that is gluten free anyway but they market a "gluten free" one separately for twice the price? 🤔

kaytee87 · 27/10/2018 20:31

I wonder if people who say being gluten free is 'fashionable' realise that celiac disease is a serious auto immune disease that can lead to IBS, osteoporosis and bone loss, dental problems, bowel cancer .... very fashionable

Dlux · 27/10/2018 20:36

OP some people have serious allergies and in light of recent news maybe we should all be a bit more positive and understanding.
I mean, it hardly impacts my life to see that on a label but it can be life saving for some.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/10/2018 20:45

Don’t forget the diabetes, lymphoma, miscarriage, infertility, pre term labour which exposure to gluten for people with coeliac disease can result in.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 27/10/2018 21:30

I’m gluten free and dairy free. I have to be careful with what I put on my skin. I’m another to second why anyone would do this when they can eat normal food. It taste like crap and is stupidly expensive

TwllBach · 27/10/2018 21:33

My son is gluten intolerant and I didn’t realise either. I scoffed at the advert until DP came across information that said it can cause a reaction, then I felt guilty.

MiracleMaxine · 27/10/2018 21:44

I thought this was bullshit as well but my brain has just made the connection that I have massive rashes all over my skin, dermatitis on my scalp. I'm gluten intolerant and don't pay attention to my skincare/shampoo. I guess I should start.

Floralnomad · 27/10/2018 21:49

Nico gf shampoo and skin care products are not anymore expensive than the ones that contain gluten . I also second what another poster said about being glad that being gf is now ‘fashionable’ , my dd has been coeliac for about 9 years and the difference in quality and availability of foods , particularly when eating out is brilliant.

Birthdayhat · 27/10/2018 22:16

Lots of things have gluten in that you wouldn't expect, suncream is another. These products can easily end up in your mouth, especially kids so it's not just skin reactions.
