I have dyspraxia. It doesn't usually bother me because I have my skills in muscle memory. It impacts acquiring new skills and means that it takes longer for me to judge speed, distance and balance.
I can ride a bike but I hate it because I find it incredibly hard to start cycling from a stand, and you have to stop your bike and start it again ALL THE TIME at lights and turns and so on.
I can drive sort of but not well enough to pass a test.
Anyway, to get my child to daycare and myself to work on time, I can't rely on public transport. I tried but it's a nightmare.
I got a cargo bike, it's a trike with a wagon up in the front for the child and it also has a battery assist and 7 gears.
I thought the problems I would have would be
- Positioning it when walking with it
- Turning at junctions
- Changing gear
I took it out for an exploratory spin and the problems I had were
- Positioning it when walking with it, and getting it back in the garage
- Starting from a stand
- It keeps listing to the right when I pedal
I literally went up to the end of the road, walked it to a bike lane and then came back. I feel so useless, like more than usual.
I haven't even tried a junction and when it was time to turn a corner, I just got off and walked. The manual suggests you should take corners at a walking speed and this has shit me up so I basically come up to turns with the brakes on, and then have to get off because I have completely undershot the walking speed thing in my anxiety.
Oh fuck what have I done etc.
I really need this tool, so I need to get this stuff in my muscle memory fast. I don't know what I should be doing with the gears and I left the battery motor thing switched off while I figured out the basics.
I put it in first gear for going up and down the slight incline on the road.
Break it down for me... what could be making me list to the right? Should I leave it in first gear or should I be adventurous and change up? When do I do that? What is making this so bloody challenging? I really didn't anticipate feeling so out of my depth with a bloody trike.
