Anyone want to send some sympathy- agony with back

Blackberry10 · 26/10/2018 19:59

All I bloody did was stand up from the chair. I felt a pain in my lower back fell in a heap screaming. Lucky my husband was around. He had to carry me to the car and into the doctors.

When it happened it we’ll the pain was worse then childbirth (and I had forceps with a failed epidural). I was physically sick and my head started to spin.

The doctor says it’s a pulled muscle, he did not examine my properly as was in too much pain. I am taking tramadol and diazepam but they are not touching it. Every time I try and walk I am screaming in agony. I can’t have any anti inflammatory as I only have one kidney. I am in bed now trying to get comfy and hoping the mix of the drugs may at least send me to sleep. I know pulling a muscle was bad but with the pain I honestly thought I had slipped a disk or something.

I hope the doctor was right as he dignosed me just by looking at me
Anyone want to send me some positive vibes or have any tips for getting comfy or reliving the pain

I’ll send you positive vibes. Am currently in pain with my shoulder after giving it a very bad bash earlier this week. Not getting better so off to minor injuries tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon

I don't have any advice, but have some Cake and sympathy.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 26/10/2018 20:05

Initial rest, then gentle stretching after a few days of painkillers. It's beyond grim, I used to really suffer when my DDs were little. It's the sort of pain that sets your teeth on edge.

I found an infra red heat massager works wonders, as does a hot water bottle and heat patches. Anything to relax the muscles. And lots of soaks in the bath with Radox Grin And don't sit anywhere, lie down.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

You have my absolute sympathy.
This happened to me earlier in the year and an MRI diagnosed 2 prolapsed discs.
Never been in so much pain, I’m still struggling now although completely functioning.
Stretch and exercise really are key, but I completely understand there’s a bit of time when this is utterly impossible. Dp had to shower me once I was able to stand for a couple of minutes at a time.
The drugs seemed to do bloody nothing for me other than totally kill my appetite Shock
Put a pillow under your knees when you’re lying flat on your back, it really does help a little to relieve some of the weight sitting at the bottom of your back Flowers

CakeNinja · 26/10/2018 20:14

The doctor won’t be able to tell much but initially mine thought it was muscular because I too was in too much pain for him to do anything other than look at me - the pain it took for dp to actually get me in the car is almost too much to even think about now!!!
It may well be muscular, backs are complicated things. Brew

Sorry OP I had muscle spasm in my back a few years ago and the GP said the pain can often be worse than a slipped disc...she did acupuncture which worked quite well.

Hazza000 · 26/10/2018 20:27

Hi much sympathy I have had back problems FYI you can self-refer to a physio

yawning801 · 26/10/2018 20:32

In terms of back problems, been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Hang in there OP Flowers

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 26/10/2018 20:34

I know it sounds like bollocks, but acupuncture made a massive diff when I had muscular back pain.

teenagetantrums · 26/10/2018 20:39

I had this a month ago. Stood up then couldn't move for 5days. Could lie down or stand but not sit..had to wee standing up. Painkillers and l forced myself to move and strech every hour. Took about 2weeks until l was able to do everything normally. Shame you cant have ibuprofen. So maybe heat pads.

Have a good any chance of getting to work on Monday. It’s a job I have just started it’s just an hour a day being a dinner lady

Hi please do not have a hit bath or hot shower it will make it worse. Cold/hot compress works well.
Get well soon

Jagblue · 27/10/2018 00:13

The heat will make your back swell and you risk further inflammation.

CarryOnScreamingValenta · 27/10/2018 00:14

Be careful! I'm guessing as a dinner lady you are supervising children rather than cooking and lifting heavy pots etc.

HeddaGarbled · 27/10/2018 00:20

Try putting a pillow or two under your thighs when you are lying on your back. The slight tilt this gives your spine can often relieve the pain a little. Or try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs to reduce the twist in your spine.

Letsgetreadytorumba · 27/10/2018 00:21

Be careful, if you have an osteopath locally it’s worth a go. Plenty of people think it’s a load of crap, but I’ve hobbled in and walked back out at times. It can feel like they just “ping” something back to where it should be. I don’t “click” so manipulation doesn’t do anything for me, but massage and acupuncture do help if it’s extreme (rather than the chronic grinding pain I have every day).

I don’t know why they love giving out tramadol for back pain, it constipates you which is utterly horrific when you have back pain. Make sure you’re taking lactulose/senna with it or you’ll make matters worse.

Don’t go to work on Monday if you’re still like this, you’ll make it worse and cause more problems long term. Phone out of hours, ask if amatryptaline/nortriptaline is an option. They both make you a bit tired (I find nortriptaline is a better option) but nothing like diazepam.

Letsgetreadytorumba · 27/10/2018 00:23

Ps- Good advice from hedda, if you have a small yoga/Pilates ball (30cm or so) try putting it under your sacrum. It depends wheee the pain is coming from but I find that takes the pressure off and makes things more comfortable.

I have had muscle spasms in my back twice -
Both times when I’ve had a toddler and I think it was the constant bending and carrying that did it.

The pain was excruciating. You’ve done well to get to bed - keep moving small amounts regularly. I ended up needing an injection of diclofenac because I couldn’t even get to the toilet even with DH helping.

You have my every sympathy. I’d rather do childbirth 10 times than an hour of back pain.

DrCoconut · 27/10/2018 10:04

I had a muscle spasm in my back while I was pregnant. You could actually see the muscle kind of knotted up through the skin. I cried with pain and was only able to have paracetamol and deep heat. I found heat helped. I spent a lot of time lying with a hot water bottle under my back.
