Any optometrists around?

I have a contact lens prescription question - I use dailies and have for a couple of months, but only really wear them occasionally. When I wear them, I would say I can’t necessarily see as far with them as I can in my glasses. My contacts are the same for both eyes, the power is 180, BC: 8.5.

However, my actual prescription has my eyes down as different -
Right: SPH -1.75 CYL +0.25 Axis 160
Left: SPH -1.75 CYL +0.5 Axis 15

So my question is - how can both eyes need the same contact lens prescription if my eye test doesn’t match this? I wouldn’t even question it but been doing a tidy up today and found my prescription and spotted it.

I think the -1.75 corrects the vision, so both eyes the same.

Two possibilities - one is that actually one of your contact lenses is wrong !Grin

But a contact lens is floating on your cornea,so your eyes are actually corrected by an eye-tears-contact lens sandwich so the correction you get can be different from the actual power of the contact lens, thus is why your optometrist tests what you can see in your lenses rather than just ordering from your glasses prescription.

The power can't be 180. That doesn't exist as dioptric power goes up in steps of 0.25 so it can either be 1.50 or 1.75.
Personally I would give you -1.50 in both eyes. As you have a little bit of astigmatism - which is the second number in your prescription. That basically equates to your right eye being -1.75 along the vertical meridian and -1.50 along the horizontal one
In the other eye you are -1.75 along one and -1.25 along the other meridian.

Oh and yes they won't be quite as clear as your glasses as you don't have the astigmatism part corrected. Just go back and have a check up. You may need a slightly thicker lens or a lens that corrects the astigmatism in your left eye.

The power can’t be 180.
Most contact lenses only correct the sphere (sph) part of your prescription.
The cyl is the little bit extra you need on just one axis.
Don’t worry about the cyl or axis for contacts, just the sph.
