Could you live long term without TV or netflix etc?

I lived 12 weeks without a TV because my old one went up in smoke - (no great damage done). I then waited to get a new one as I wanted to see how long I could last and also for financial reasons. I now have a new TV but find I'm not watching a lot at all. I only have freeview, no sky or anything else. Has anyone lived long term in UK without a TV and if so, what made you eventually get a set, if you did.

If you can watch things online, you're not living without a screen.

If you have no internet and no TV, that's a different story.

Am I the only one who’s Hmm at all the pieple saying “oh yes I could easily do without watching TV- I only stream online/watch films/watch Netflix!!!
Just because you aren’t watching a terrestrial channel at the precise time it is broadcast on a tradition TV set doesn’t mean you aren’t watching ‘TV’ - Netflix/films/online means you are still watching a programme that has been made for a screen and doesn’t make you any better to watch it that way!!!!

Pesilica · 27/10/2018 12:30

No one is saying it makes them better Confused yes it's watching films and TV shows but it's a different way of consuming it and it's interesting to see if people are moving away from traditional TV as a way of consuming the content.
And op asked could you live without TV or Netflix, so yes to one no to the other, it's just answering the question!

CakeNinja · 27/10/2018 12:30

Completely agree Brie, hence my comment upthread somewhere saying programmes are programmes regardless of How you watch them!

We didn't have one for a few years when kids were little.
I didn't want them watching the shit that was on and me and dh didn't watch tv either at that time.
We have two now and when they are gone we probably won't bother again.
Eldest has left home, middle one will be soon, and youngest is hardly here.

I went around 5 years without a TV at a time when I only had dial up internet so I can't have been watching online. I did occasionally watch DVDs of films and borrowed a couple of boxsets like Spooks from a friend.

Because of my limited broadband contract (by choice) I wasn't watching anything on iplayer or similar for the twelve weeks I was TV less. I would say I caught up with news on BBC website or the radio but did not miss watching any programmes. I did have a separate DVD player but only watched about 5 films on that. Clearly I am towards the end of the spectrum. I don't even really understand what Netflix is or how it works. But each to their own.

We didn’t have a Tv for over 10 years after leaving uni. We eventually got one when Dc were about 4 and 1 and dc2 had dropped his morning nap and we needed something to keep them both entertaining on weekend mornings while we went back to bed for a cup of coffee etc. It has been a useful babysitter over the years.
DP still never watches it and I only watch a couple of hours of catch up on a Sunday evening while ironing.

I did in a flat for six months & honestly it was a bit boring. I love to read and have a healthy bookshelf but it's just nice to have the option to put some crap on the telly or even watch something good

SoMuchToBits · 27/10/2018 21:38

I'd be fine so long as I had Radio 4 and my CD player!

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/10/2018 21:38

That's like asking,
"Could you live without cheesecake"
Yes, course you could .. but fucked if I'd want too .

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 28/10/2018 02:18

I didn’t have a tv for a while when I was pregnant with DD1 and it didn’t bother me too much. I read and things.

But since having children I have it on low in the background most of the day, the kids rarely watch it when it’s down low but there’s something comforting about it ! I don’t know why

Seniorschoolmum · 28/10/2018 03:18

I’d miss it but it wouldn’t be a problem. Ds would hate it.

The internet here is so poor that the chance of downloading a film is almost nil. And no cable either, so we only have basic freeview.
And I don’t get time to watch that much.

ScruffbagsRUs · 28/10/2018 07:35

I don't watch TV at all (I wouldn't even know what to do with the remote FFS Grin), and I've never watched anything on Netflix. I found that the last time I watched TV, the shows I watched were either repeats or just plain boring.

I'd much rather be in the gym, swimming, outdoors with the dogs, or just going for a walk.

LaDaronne · 28/10/2018 07:48

Grew up without a TV. Never watch it now, will occasionally watch something on Youtube. I did have six months without TV OR internet a few years ago. Now that was hardcore!
