Why are Sky newsreaders ALREADY wearing poppies?

Not because they want to or because it means something to them...

But obviously because they’ve been told to.

This makes them meaningless.

The poppy is not meaningless. What an odd thing to vouchsafe.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/10/2018 11:28

Probably because if they don't, someone somewhere will complain that they are not.

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/10/2018 11:29

Today is launch day of the 2018 poppy appeal btw.

Nothing wrong with them wearing them early!!

CatAndMice · 25/10/2018 11:54

Nothing wrong with them wearing them early!!

If it’s their choice to do so.

It's going to be a very long few weeks. The poppy rows are already heating up. I don't wear one anymore because of all the angst they cause.

RancidOldHag · 25/10/2018 12:00

It'll be because the British Legion launched the poppy campaign today, and it'll be big this year because it is the centenary.

So I guess SKY (and probably other broadcasters) will have told staff who appear on camera that unless they wish to opt out from wearing a poppy at all, they are to be worn on air until 11/11/18

Personally, I don't wear a poppy until after bonfire night. But if it was part of work dress code to wear one representationally between dates specified by the company, then I wouid have no difficulty in complying, and (again guessing) it seems SKY prenters have a similar view.

AnonaMouse1 · 25/10/2018 12:00

Maybe it is their choice?

You are being weird about a poppy?

Longtalljosie · 25/10/2018 12:05

It’s not compulsory. But broadcasters have a date that they wear them on air from - so they don’t start in dribs and drabs. Most broadcasters are quite happy to wear them on air, and also agree with the idea of a specific date so it doesn’t get earlier and earlier. It’s also helpful for the British legion - it keeps the campaign visible.

AaahhwoooooOOOOooOOOOo1 · 25/10/2018 12:21

I knew there would be a thread about Poppies soon. Every year.

The poppy appeal launched today, that’s why presenters will be wearing them.

You have no idea what the presenter’s motivation is.

AnonaMouse1 · 25/10/2018 12:22

Lol I think op is out looking for an argument here

Presenters are capable of declining if they don't want to wear one!!

CatAndMice · 25/10/2018 12:25

But they’re not capable of declining, are they? Not without being hauled over the coals. And that is a problem. BBC news presenters are not wearing them, in spite of the date. Nor are they on ITV (I’ve just checked).

A side issue I'd like to raise if you don't mind. We used to say, Interesting First Post, back when all round here were fields.

StormCloudsDoClear · 25/10/2018 12:29

TRBL launched Poppy appeal today, it's the centenary of the end of the first world war. It's going to be a big one.

If your so offended i'd brace yourself now, it's going to be a long 3 weeks for you...

People can choose not to wear one, nobody cares really. People died for you to have free will, feel free to adopt that free will and do what you want.

I wear one, I wear one with pride. My great great grandfather survived the Somme, my great grandfather a POW in WW2, my husband a serving member of HM Forces. So it's personal to me. I've known the people in the boxes flown back, but I would expect anyone who didn't support TRBL or remembrance to wear one if they didn't want to.

I quite like the purple poppies for the animals lost to war. I wear one of them too. Do what you want.

StormCloudsDoClear · 25/10/2018 12:30

**Wouldn't expect anyone....

Lol that could have gotten a bit ropey then 😂

JingsMahBucket · 25/10/2018 12:33

I'm new this. Would someone please explain to me what the great poppy row is about?

JingsMahBucket · 25/10/2018 12:33

*new to this

PortiaCastis · 25/10/2018 12:34

Poppy appeal launched today and I shall be wearing one, anyway if tv people didn't wear one some bright spark would be asking why not.

StormCloudsDoClear · 25/10/2018 12:36

Portia indeed, damned if they do damned if they don't.

I'm sure you'll see more on presenters from tomorrow onwards OP. Sky must have just decided to align with the launch of Poppy appeal.

AnonaMouse1 · 25/10/2018 12:37

Hauled over coals??

Don't be ridiculous.... where are you getting this information from op?? Where?

nicebitofquiche · 25/10/2018 12:38

Jingsmahbucket it's mumsnet. Someone somewhere will be upset, offended, fuming about the most trivial of things every day. Will post about it and an argument will start. There are other good things about MN so stay with it.

AnonaMouse1 · 25/10/2018 12:39

But they’re not capable of declining, are they? Not without being hauled over the coals.

Ok.... this....how do you know this? What is your source op?

CatAndMice · 25/10/2018 12:39

It just struck me as really early. Nothing more, nothing less. I don’t remember seeing them before November before. Usually it’s just a week or so of seeing them.

OP posts:
PortiaCastis · 25/10/2018 12:40

I remember a school trip to Ypres it was horrifying to realise how many people died for our freedom, so now we have a choice whether to wear a poppy or not because of them

AnonaMouse1 · 25/10/2018 12:40

I have never in my 50 years on this planet living in the north and the south, experienced anyone objecting to wearing a poppy

Is this one of those mumsnet things you don't see in RL?
