Treat this afternoon , I'm getting my hair coloured , properly , at a salon !
The owner of the salon is doing the colour , do I leave a tip as it's the owner , he's very sweet and I don't want to get it wrong and cause offence either way . He's a one man band at the moment , what would you do and if you leave a tip how much is the correct amount ( again I want to be correct and not cause offence )
Thanks

I never tip at hairdressers...didn't realise this was a done thing?

gothefcktosleep · 25/10/2018 09:31

You can offer and he can choose to accept or refuse?

NorthernRunner · 25/10/2018 09:33

I don’t tip a cut and blow dry but I do with a colour as it takes for ever! I tend to just round it up to nearest ten x

I do at the salon I go to. I always say to have a coffee on me :)

Kezzie200 · 25/10/2018 09:36

I don't tip owners if its truly expensive (as some places can be). If they are cheaper I do.

luckyfucky · 25/10/2018 09:38

As an ex stylist, the owner of the salon was only tipped 50% of the time, so no pressure to do so. If you were going to leave a tip I would recommend 10% of your bill. Hope that helps!

mathsy · 25/10/2018 09:39

If it cost anything less than £50 I might leave a tip. More than £50 then no as there's already a massive mark up.

prettygreywalls · 25/10/2018 13:49

Thank you all , I will play it by ear

How can anyone not know that tipping at the hairdresser's is the normal thing to do?

Mumoffourneedstea · 25/10/2018 13:51

We have a lovely lady that comes round to the house to do all 6 of us. I feel we get too much of a bargain so always add a tenner. If we went to a shop we probably would round it up to next £10.

LaDameAuxLicornes · 25/10/2018 13:55

I tip employees but not the salon owner. I thought that was the conventional way to do it. The owner has jurisdiction over the prices they charge, whereas the employees don't, so I would feel a bit odd tipping the owner. If it's the owner who cuts my hair then I still leave a couple of pounds for the junior employee who washes my hair, though.

ExplodedPeach · 25/10/2018 14:24

I wouldn't tip if they set their own prices.

Mind you, I rarely tip employees either, because they never seem to listen to what I actually want!

Tipping baffles me though, it's so ridiculously arbitrary what we tip for and what we don't. So I don't tend to make a habit of it.

ExplodedPeach · 25/10/2018 14:24

(except in restaurants)

Why is it? I have never tipped any hairdresser, including my current one who has cut my hair for 21 years.

TillyVonMilly · 25/10/2018 14:34

I went to a new place last week, it was the salon owner who did my hair, small salon and she did a lovely job. I rounded it up to the next £10, she said thanks and that she’d give some to the girl that washed my hair.

MapleSpice · 25/10/2018 14:40

I tip if I think they've done a really good job! My hair is challenging

Buxtonstill · 25/10/2018 16:02

I used to feel really awkward giving a tip to the hairdresser, then one to the shampooer etc, £2 felt too mean yet I wasn't going to give them £5 each. My Colour costs around £160 (Aveda) and I am not going to give 10% as someone previously suggested. I normally nip into the Tesco Express on the way, and buy a tub of sweets for a few £'s (celebrations etc) for £3-4 and tell them they are for everybody.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/10/2018 16:58

10% is a lot - I pay €150/€160 for highlights and a cut but only tip €5.

MrsEricBana · 25/10/2018 17:09

I don't get tipping at the hairdressers' either. It's a normal service so why doesn't it just cost the price it is. Restaurant different as you're tipping the server on top of the food.
