Critique my fear of choking foods!

DS is nearly 2. My major fear is chocking so I know I'm overly anxious and hyper vigilant to any risk.

Mum gave him marshmallows today. They're on my forbidden list (and she knows this but felt bad that the other kids were allowed at playgroup)

So can you tell me if I'm being over the top?

My list-
Grapes - only if quartered
No hot dogs
No marshmallows
No cherry tomatoes
I don't allow sweets but I realise I might be wrong with that
No large Nuts
No hard boiled sweets
No mini eggs
No round lollipops

I worry about it too (although DD is 8 months so still going through the whole spotting what is just a gag reflex thing) it looks like a fairly sensible list to me. Have you done a baby/child 1st aid course, it helped me a bit in that I still worry but if it happened I would know what to do.

NannyR · 24/10/2018 22:15

Any food can be a choking risk - I recently had to do back slaps on a toddler who was choking on a piece of baked potato skin. What is important is that you know what to do if it happens, do a first aid course every few years, refresh your knowledge by watching the st John's ambulance videos regularly.
The toddler I look after eats cherry tomatoes halved and grapes quartered, I also chop up blueberries as she has a habit of shoving a load in at once. The rest of your list she wouldn't eat anyway at the moment.

Popcorn

Tidythatmess · 24/10/2018 22:35

Your list is the same as mine...I also have Malteasers on there.

MadeForThis · 24/10/2018 22:38

Apple skin. Dd has almost choked on that. I'm also not a fan of haribo type sweets.

Mummymummums · 24/10/2018 22:40

Apples in chunks are a risk.

TheSheepofWallSt · 24/10/2018 22:40

Ummm no that’s pretty standard.

Basically nothing smooth and spherical unless it can be quartered.
No blueberries.
No whole nuts.
No gobs of peanut butter.
No sweets.

Sausages are sliced up.
Apples are peeled, unless I’m watching him like a hawk.
Carrot batons similarly closely watched.

And I’m fairly chilled out about food- did baby led weaning and everything. Choking is terrifying, and it’s right to be cautious,

sourpatchkid · 24/10/2018 22:56

Oh thanks everyone, I expected to be told I was over the top about it!

Yes popcorn is on my list too and malteasers!

I have done first aid training, as has mum but I know she isn't as vigilant as me (I don't take my eyes off him if he's eating) she thinks I'm over the top but it's good to know it's a standard list for most!

Some of this is still on my list and mine are nearly 4... but I do now say make sure you crunch the food if they have things I would worry about
Do what feels right for you but I also agre that choking could be on most things

MamaHechtick · 24/10/2018 23:28

Yorkshire pudding. DS choked on a bit of one, my dad had to do back smacks on him.

TheWiseWomansFear · 24/10/2018 23:32

I don't like my adult family eating roast beef after my sister choked on it, I can barely eat a slice because it takes so long to chew to be safe Envy

sourpatchkid · 24/10/2018 23:35

my aim was to narrow down my list, not add new ones

Cherry tomatoes I'd just quarter like grapes, can't really see the issue with that.
Marshmallows at that age I'd probably have snipped/torn smaller.
Not sure what the hot dog issue is though?
Nuts I'd crush a bit smaller

I try to make most foods available to try so rather than writing them off I'd try to find ways of making them safer to eat

sourpatchkid · 25/10/2018 07:05

Sorry my last post has smiley faces on it - it seems mean without them when I was actually just being silly thanks mumsnet

I think hot dogs are quite a common one because they're throat sized and have slippy skin

BiscuitDrama · 25/10/2018 07:09

Here’s what I do.

I slice hotdogs and other sausages lengthwise.

Sweets ( not boiled) and marshmallows I give.

I think cherry tomatoes cut in half are ok.

sourpatchkid · 25/10/2018 07:29

To be honest he just doesn't like cherry tomatoes otherwise I would cut them up
