iPad - 4g or just WiFi?

I’m a total dunce about this stuff so any guidance would be much appreciated. Ds is autistic and had been awarded a tablet through the Family Fund to help him pass the time on his long journey to his new special school as he’s getting quite upset in his taxi every day. We’ve been offered one with just WiFi that has a 128gb memory or one that also has 4G but only a 32gb memory. I have an ancient iPad mini that I love but I pretty much only use if for photographs and the internet. Ds would be playing games like minecraft and watching videos on YouTube. I don’t really understand how the 4g works, presumably I’d have to set up a data plan, would I have to do that through my mobile network (I’m on o2) or can I set it up directly with apple? If we go for one with WiFi only is it possible for him to save videos on it to watch when he’s out of wifi range? Can he play mine craft out and about? Anything else I should consider? Thanks x

Get the WiFi one and then get a mobile WiFi thing from your Mobile provider and then tether to it if not in WiFi range

Something like this www.o2.co.uk/shop/pocket-hotspot/huawei-4g-2017#contractType=paymonthly

o2 is definitely worth a look. My son has a 4g sim for his iPad on pay monthly. He gets 5gb a month and you can also set a spend allowance so it doesn't go over that 5gb. Also whatever data isn't used rolls over to the next month. There are different data packs. Shop around and see which one suits.

4g means he'd be able to use the internet functions when out and about, but yes you'd pay for that connectivity. The pad would essentially function as a giant phone.

Youtube videos are quite data hungry. I wouldn't really recommend he does this unless you can get a high volume contract. I wonder if you might look at some kind of service which lets you predownload videos to watch offline. I think BBC iplayer allows this, for example. Maybe itunes as well.

I think you can play Minecraft when offline, so wifi only should work.

I don't see the point of getting the Huawei device linked? Just get a 4G one if you want it to connect to the internet.

You can play Minecraft offline. Netflix, iPlayer and amazon video you can download stuff to watch offline too. You tube does use quite a bit of data. Hope this helps.

I didn’t know that about Netflix, that’s really helpful thank you x I think we’ll go with the bigger memory then
