Living next door to homing pigeons?

The house next door to us has sold, and apparently the new owners wanted a big garden for their homing pigeons! Is it going to be awful living with them next door? Is our garden going to be covered in pigeon shit? What about the garden birds that we feed, will their pigeons come and eat it all? If anyone has any experience of having or living near homing pigeons and can shed some light, that would be great.

I feel your pain op. Not pigeons but seagulls. And a nest outside our bedroom window!! News flash - seagulls never fucking sleep!
Check with your local council /environmental health authorities to see if he would need planning permission.

They're not moved in yet, not sure when they will be here, couple of months perhaps? The sold sign only went up 2 weeks ago. The few woodpigeons we have round here bug me by being greedy gits and pooing all over my daughters swing. I can't bear the thought of more pigeons

Good idea about the council, I'll get onto them.

Might be worth checking your deeds as well. Some of my previous properties have had convenants on them regarding keeping lifestock.

As a kid I caught scabbies from the pigeons next door. Or so my mum said.

My gut reaction is that homing pigeons live in sheds. So you may find the only time you have extra birds is after a race. Might be worth looking up how they are kept?

The house backing on to our old house's garden had pigeons (racing? Homing? I don't know if there's a difference?) We didn't see or hear much of them. Every afternoon at about 4pm he used to fly them in a flock. They used to swoop round and round above the neighborhood. We used to take our little boys to lay on the lawn and watch them go.

Thinking about it now I don't know about the ethics of how long they should be in the loft but they certainly weren't all over our garden. Unlike the neighbours cats at our current house. Whole other story.

Google your own council regs, just read Gravesend allow 12 pigeons only. And you can complain about noise /mess and they can enforce they are rehomed. The article did mention the difficulty of a homing pigeon not being allowed to come home though! Grin
Tbh the idea of a BB gun + seagulls has been thoroughly tempting these past few years.

I don't recall anything being in our deeds about keeping pigeons. It specified no cows or pigs but nothing about pigeons.

I did try and look on my council website but not really sure what I'm looking for exactly. West Lindsey District Council if anyone can help with that for me?

I used to live next door to a man with pigeons. They were very quiet, I never noticed any mess air noise. Nothing like bloody seagulls, they really are noisy, dirty things!

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/10/2018 17:46

Afaik they stay in their shed. Yes they’ll fly into the garden after a race but they’re normally starving and come straight into the shed. So shouldn’t be hopping around your garden. A neighbour (not next door) used to have them and I rarely saw any.
