I don't wear wigs, but after years of wearing hair extensions, I am left with very thin hair, I've been tempted to try wigs, but the really good ones are expensive.

Do you wear wigs?

Giveyourheadawiggle · 24/10/2018 13:37

I do Grin I’ve got one expensive one (but NHS subsidised) and a few cheap ones. If you’re careful with your choices, cheaper one can be really good! Wiwigs have some good ones (also some really bad ones Hmm). I’m getting into the groove of wearing them now! You should try! Would certainly give your hair a chance to recover, and saves so much time in the mornings.

I've been looking at wigs because my hair is incredibly thin and falling out. I couldn't afford an amazing one but I've been looking at fun ones from Lush wigs. I love the idea of long, green hair one day and then short purple hair the next!

My hair's completely grey now and when I have it dyed (even at the hairdresser) my roots come through within a fortnight! Also my hair isn't great anyway. So I have actually seriously considered getting a decent wig. A cut/colour/blow dry round here costs around £120 so I wondered if a wig would be more cost efficient as well as looking nicer.

Most of the women in my family wear wigs (Jewish). Do you need help with types, fitting or best to buy?

SenecaFalls · 24/10/2018 14:42

I have been thinking about wearing a wig as my gray grows out. I think my main question would be comfort. Are there some brands that are more comfortable than others. Plus, I have a big head.

Want2bSupermum · 24/10/2018 15:47

Yes some brands are more comfortable than others, especially if you are in a hot climate. You don't want synthetic. It gets very hot. My aunt is very picky about her wigs. Other women less so in my family. The good news is that generally the range of dark hair wigs is amazing because of the market for conservative Jews. Most are dark haired. The bad news is that good quality ones which are comfortable and sit securely are expensive. Expect to pay $175+ here in the US for each wig. My aunt has three identical ones. Maintenance is needed every 3 months. Yes you can get them cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Thanks, Want2b. There is a large Jewish community in my Southern US town. In fact, there is an Orthodox synagogue near my home. I have also noticed online that there are several wig shops in town. So that's where I will be headed. Thanks!

Def check them out and have them help you learn how to wear them. It takes some getting used to but once you are practiced it is very easy.

Want2bSupermum · 24/10/2018 17:42

Haha my pricing is missing a zero. $1750+ is the cost for a good natural wig. The cheaper ones are not good at all. My aunts have lasted her decades. Almost 30 years.
