Duplex Kidney?!

Long time reader, first time poster!
Had my 20 week scan and found out we are having a girl which is lovely! But they have said it looks as if she has a duplex kidney on one side, So we have a further scan that we are awaiting the date of at a different hospital.
I’m going out of my mind with worry as I’ve googled (I know, I shouldn’t!) and all that comes up are horror stories of frequent UTI’s and kidney reflux and multiple surgeries!!
I appreciate there are different types and to be honest I know I’m probably just going to have to wait but I just wondered if anyone has any personal experiences of this?
I just don’t want her to have to be put through so many tests when so young! Although I do appreciate it can be a lot worse, and I feel as if I’m moaning about something relatively low scale compared to other things, I’m just worried and scared.

Thanks

Hi - my son had this. He had surgery when he was 9 months old . It was very quick & routine.
He is now a 6’2” 17 year old.

He did have multiple UTIs before his operation which wasn’t pleasant for him. He has slight reduced function in the affected kidney but all is fine

Thank you, that’s the part that scares me, so tiny and having to go through surgery 😔 But it’s nice to hear your son is now older and ok apart from reduced function. X

I was very very scary at the time but to be honest he was in so much pain with the UTIs we knew it was the better option.

Sending all the best for your little girl 💐

Just to add - there are so many different degrees of the problem hopefully your LO will be ok & won’t need an operation.
Enjoy your pregnancy and try not to worry x

A friend of a friend has a DS with duplex kidney. He's three now and has had no real problems.

justpaintit · 24/10/2018 10:43

My nephews wife has this. She’s not had any surgery’s for it and I get more UTIs than she does. It sounds like each case might be different and that there are different degrees of it.

I only found out that I have a duplex kidney when I had an ultrasound to check my uterus following my first pregnancy. Got to 30 without knowing about it, never get UTIs and it’s not given me any problems. Hope that helps!

StillMedusa · 24/10/2018 10:50

My Dad had one ..only discovered by chance when he was having a scan for something different. Never caused him problems :)

befairdontjudge · 24/10/2018 21:02

I have one got to 40 and had a kidney stone. Other than that no problems or infections.

GreenAeroplane · 24/10/2018 21:33

Thanks all for your replies, I guess I’ll have to wait and see what the more in depth scan brings!
Hopefully it’ll be something that causes her no problems 🙁 xx

My DD diagnosed with duplex at 20 week scan. Had a few more scans and it kept getting worse due to ureter dilation.
Born at 41 weeks absolutely fine and chunky. Back to hospital at 5 days for scan and then on antibiotics for the foreseeable to ward off infection. She did have a couple of bad infections leading to hospital stays for IV antibiotics.
Eventually had surgery at 18mths old. In 1 day with operation the next day and then home the day after. Running around the ward 2 hours after op! They removed most of the duplex kidney and some dodgy plumbing.
Had to have scans for 4 years after to keep an eye on things. Now a 12 year old madam who apart from the scars (keyhole) is as fit as a fiddle. Does gymnastics and has never let only having 1 full kidney stop her doing anything physical.

Cried bucket loads when I found out all those years ago but it was just the unknown. Had an amazing surgeon in the North of England who explained everything and put us at ease.

I'm another one who has this but it was only discovered on a scan for something else. Hasn't cause me any issues at all.

MiddlingMum · 25/10/2018 21:50

My cousin's daughter had this. It wasn't diagnosed until a couple of weeks after she was born so she was a bit poorly but had an operation and is perfectly okay now. Mid twenties, fit, healthy and in the emergency services.

It's a worry but if it's diagnosed early it's likely to be a very good outcome.

HeronLanyon · 25/10/2018 21:57

I am another who found out I have a duplex kidney after a recent scan for something unrelated. Never knew ! Have never had a uti. I am over 40. As you say there’s a whole.range of possible consequences including none at all. Good luck with it all op. Try not to worry too much as it is very treatable and it’s been spotted early.

FloralPrintFrame · 27/10/2018 07:58

Just a thought OP - my kidneys were checked due to a uterus abnormality as apparently they form at the same time and if one has formed differently, there’s an increased likelihood the other will have too. If she did have a uterus abnormality, such as a septate, it shouldn’t cause her any problems so don’t panic about that but it would be worth her knowing in advance, in case she experiences any issues trying to conceive in the future.
