Why do you love your job?

Having seen a whole FB feed of friends moaning about their jobs today, I'd love to see a positive work thread :)

What do you do, and why do you love it?

No moaning or negatives allowed!

I also love my job. Well paid and I get to be the expert in some complex issues. Also I love the politics of it (I'm a civil servant) and knowing the full story behind the news is great - just a shame I can't talk about most of it!

BringOnTheScience · 23/10/2018 23:10

I do education outreach for a big firm. My job involves all the best bits of teaching, with none of the crap. Grin

Term-time only
Great fun lessons
Wow reactions from pupils
No marking
No reports
No parents

StrumpersPlunkett · 23/10/2018 23:20

I work as a ta with 5 year olds in yr 1
They are funny and silly and curious and delightful and change every day.
I love reading with them and hearing them develop skills they will use every day for the rest of their lives.
I love watching them negotiate friendships and learn that some things are just boring and that’s ok.
It is heart breaking to be involved with some very complicated family lives but ultimately us being there as their constant each day may help stabilise part of their chaotic childhood.
I don’t get paid well nor do my colleagues but we all burst with so much love and pride in ‘our kids’ it is ok.

I am a HCA on a psychiatric intensive care unit and I love my job.

It is difficult, scary, heart breaking and dangerous but rewarding and funny at times.

My colleagues are amazing and they have my deepest respect.

Athenajm80 · 23/10/2018 23:42

My colleagues. Don't get me wrong, we have a few....difficult ones, but on the whole they're an amazing loving caring bunch. I've had (am having?) mental health problems and what helps is knowing that they have my back. The direct managers are awesome, admittedly the next level are shit, but the ones above are great too. I also love helping some of the most vulnerable people in my area. Granted I don't always agree with policy decisions but I try to make the best of it (and bend the rules if needs be) to ensure that the people who need it get the help

I LOVE my job:

It's term time only.

The hours when I'm there are pretty good and suit me.
My colleagues are lovely.
They think I'm fantastic (when I'm REALLY not)
It's interesting and varied

The pay's rubbish, but the benefits far outweigh that.

Kaybush · 24/10/2018 00:17

@BringOnTheScience Your job sounds amazing!

I've been in the e-learning industry for nearly 18 years now and looking for a change. Would you be able to tell me a little bit more about what you do?

nocoolnamesleft · 24/10/2018 00:30

I'm a paediatrician. I hate my job. The hours are crap. The stress is appalling. When you can't save them it rips you apart. When I say that the job will probably kill me, I mean it literally.

And just sometimes you get handed a blue floppy unbreathing scrap, and get to hand back a pink screaming baby. And then I remember why I fucking love this job.

flossietoot · 24/10/2018 00:34

I am a charity director. I love it as every day is different- huge amount of variety, I work with lovely people who do lots of front line work changing peoples lives. I am relatively well paid and I have flexibility and no horrible bosses being mean to me!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 24/10/2018 07:04

HGV driver. Weird hours, get covered in muck, pay's not brilliant.

But the view over the hedge is worth it. Two recent runs stick out: Eccleshall to Uttoxeter, then across Rutland from Zouch to Stamford. The descent from Saddleworth on a clear day, or the 10 second glimpse of the Wirral and North Wales from the top of Miller's Bridge. You can't buy that.

SawnUpLooRoll · 24/10/2018 18:46

This thread has made me smile from ear to ear!

I'm a teacher in a secondary school. The kids make me laugh every day, I get to talk about what I love with fresh minds, and getting to see the lightbulb moment so often makes me feel hugely lucky.

The stories for the pub are always a hoot too ;)

Because of the clients I work with. They are high profile and massive game changers. I have picked up some tips from them - all follow their own rules.

When I go to bed I know I sleep for 3.5 hours, no more no less. I sleep in batches. I got up at 00:30 this morning and walked down to my office and worked for four hours then went back to sleep. At 8:30 I was taking one DC to school and then went for a long run around our local lake and hills. By 14:00 I had enabled a client to get a large business loan (millions), had secured a job for a graduate, and listened to my favourite soundtrack. At 14:10 I went to sleep and woke a while ago. I have eaten and will do another few hours and go to bed around 22:00. I need to start thinking about an administrator. I do like my new-found flexibility. I try to tell myself it should not be this easy, but I have problems with that statement now.

NorthEndGal · 24/10/2018 19:10

I have a small studio, and I make sea glass art. I get to spend vast amounts at time at the beach, and meet all sorts of amazing people.
I never thought I could make money from my art
My second job is on call infant care, which is brilliant as I get baby cuddles every week

MaisyPops · 24/10/2018 19:10

Love mine.

I laugh most days. I get to see the smile on students' faces when they get something. I love that you can have a laugh with secondary students, especially GCSE. No day is the same. One minute you're returning an urgent call to a parent who called at 730am and the next you're counselling a 14 year old through a breakup that seems like the end of their world. At lunch you do an enrichment club, then an hour of silence as they do an exam. It's never boring.

This week a student who has hated English asked if they could take their book home to show their Mum and Grandma! 😍

confusedandemployed · 24/10/2018 19:14

I get to be the expert and coach senior managers in a huge organisation on an important part of their job.
And I get to do it from home 100%, which means I can do the school run, keep the housework ticking over and best of all I get to be home all day with my very old and wonderful dog in the autumn of his life.

PippaRabbit · 24/10/2018 19:20

I left Primary teaching and am now self employed. I run my own livery yard (which was always a dream I'd had). I'm also a qualified riding instructor and am opening a riding school next Easter. I've seen so many bad yards I wanted to have somewhere that people could come to relax and enjoy their horses without the bitching or politics that often happens. The riding school will be separate from the livery yard and the horses/ponies won't be worked to death and will be very well cared for. It doesn't feel like work as I'm doing something I love.

user6666 · 24/10/2018 19:45

My job is ok, well paid but hard work.

I love my employer, my horse recently fell very ill which meant I couldn't go into work for a few days.

He let me work from home and no pay deducted with no complaints or moaning. That meant a lot to me and I will return the gesture with working longer days.

He is a great believer in looking after his staff and they will look after his company

GothamGirl · 24/10/2018 19:52

I manage my own diary, work flexible hours in the office, at home or on site. Get to hang out in restaurants and eat great food. Best of all is the people I work with They make me belly laugh every day.

MyPatronusIsABadger · 24/10/2018 20:16

Best thing about my old job....? I had a chair that swivelled round and a good view Wink

But I honestly love my job now. I work 20 minutes leisurely walk from home, the hours are really good, the pay is excellent for the location (on average for the area and type of work though) and my colleagues are really nice. I wear casual clothes and spend the day helping and chatting to people.
