Which kitchen layout would you choose?

Floor to Ceiling

  1. Builtin fridge freezer
  2. Dishwasher Oven and Microwave housed next to fridge freezer unit

Wall Units
a) Under counter fridge
b) dishwasher
c) oven (under hob)
d) Microwave

I really can't decide :(

Also welcome to comments/advice/critique on layouts etc.

Glad you are moving the hob- it gave me the hebbies!

al2002 · 23/10/2018 21:30

I would never again have an under the counter fridge or oven.

Are you tall? I have undercounter fridge, separate freezer and oven, leaving shedloads of counter prep and storage areas. Would never go back to a tall FF in the kitchen.

OP the last one seems ok. I would have a cupboard over a built in microwave as storage is key, also hot heavy plates or bowls at head height aren’t brill.

Also, could the counter topmof the units facing the table be extended towards the table a couple of feet to make a breakfast bar? We use ours loads.

7salmonswimming · 23/10/2018 22:53

The last one is the best of the lot, but:

  • I think you’re trying to squeeze in too much stuff. That L shaped island thing is going to make you crazy. I don’t think you have space for everything, bearing in mind people need to walk around
  • that microwave is unreachable to take hot things out. Get an under the counter one that’s a drawer, rather than a cupboard-door style. Use that corner space for storage
  • consider ditching the dining table and having a breakfast bar?
EleanorShellstropper · 23/10/2018 22:57

Layout 3, with the full height fridge but extra surface space is my favourite. I really wouldn't go for the last one, as there's no direct route through the room and I think you'd find it incredibly annoying to live with.

EleanorShellstropper · 23/10/2018 23:01

Just seen that the door next to the units is a cupboard. In that case the last one is best, but I'm not sure I'd have the peninsula sticking out.

BackforGood · 23/10/2018 23:09

The last one is the best.

Is there space for a tall fridge/ feezer between the cupboard and hallway doors. If not could you have a double vertically split door on the cupboard. Which would give you more floor space.
You don't need to put your sink under the window if you are having a dishwasher, you could have a corner one. ?
If you lost the turn of the L shape where you have the cooker you could add floor to ceiling cupboards for a short run between the hallway door and your dining table. Even slightly shallow ones would give you a mass of storage and allow you to have a long clear run of worktop on the other side

Going against the general view, but we have a hob and oven on our island and it is excellent. It is no more dangerous than one against the wall and it is far more sociable. We don't have a breakfast bar; I don't see the point if you have a kitchen table nearby. Kitchen chairs are much more comfortable than tall stools. We had a bookcase built into our island. We also have two under counter fridges which aren't a pita at all. Our architect suggested no wall hanging units to maximize light. Also I prefer inbuilt devices and don't like large fridges (with magnets and paperwork on them) . We've had our kitchen for two years and wouldn't change a thing.

TheMagicalChicken · 24/10/2018 11:53

I think this is what we're going to go for :)

Non integrated FF :)
Hob on the wall (safety first!)
1 - pull out bin cupboard
2 - these are drawers base unit
3 - more drawers
4 - microwave housing a bit nearer the hob (easier to reach)

a beautiful replica of our dining table on the right :D

General thoughts

  • big prep area by cooker (me likey)
  • Tea/coffee/toast/cereal shenanigans on small section (away form main prep area, which is an issue when DH trying to sort drinks lay table)
  • bin not under sink, nor free standing
  • everything is behind a door (we're messy gits!)
  • corner cupboards for storage of not often used things but still need (cake stands/slow cooker/big cooking pots etc)
-small door in middle is a cupboard to be used for a mini pantry and extra freezer

7Salmon "consider ditching the dining table and having a breakfast bar?"
But we really have nowhere else in the house to have a dinner table (our living room isn't beg enough)

I don't understand why a hob against the wall is more safe.

Meet0nTheIedge · 24/10/2018 16:35

If it was a straight choice between table and breakfast bar I'd definitely go with table, more comfortable and versatile. I agree with freestanding fridge-freezer, you can get more choice of models and I actually prefer the look of them to built-in. We inherited a built in dishwasher here and it was useless, but found very restricted choices to replace it with so we went freestanding and I would always do so in future.

TheMagicalChicken · 24/10/2018 16:37

You can put the pans to the back of the counter and kiddiewinks can't reach them :) Whereas if they have access to all sides there is no "back"

Also, I was thinking about the 'splash zone' - all my splashes would end up in the floor/down the back of the counter...rather than on the splash back/tiles of a wall. Shock

With Regards to builtin DW.

Shoudl I go for a normal one and maybe a cupboard door? or just a normal one and have it displayed?

Housewife2010 · 24/10/2018 18:33

I suppose as we don't have a breakfast bar we don't have children climbing over the hob. I would say that over two years of this setup we have never once considered it to be dangerous. We don't get any splashes either - other than on the hob itself. I can't imagine a situation where the food would end up splashed on the floor. It is just so nice to face into the room to chat whilst cooking rather than facing a wall.

Meet0nTheIedge · 24/10/2018 18:41

I don't think most children would climb up, but they might reach up. When mine were younger I always cooked only on the back rings when they were in the kitchen, and with the pan handles turned back towards the walls, just to get them as far out of reach as possible.

Meet0nTheIedge · 24/10/2018 18:48

Oh and for dishwasher I'd definitely go freestanding, more choice, easier to replace if nevessary and you can see the display without opening the door. I prefer the look of freestanding appliances too, but that's purely preference.

al2002 · 24/10/2018 21:57

I think freestanding DW would be fine.
I like your latest design OP, that looks good. I'm really tall -6foot- so can't manage without killing my back with under counter fridges, low ovens etc.
