One had just walked up my garden path. I know they’re nocturnal and it’s not a great sign if they’re out during the day.

Is there anything I could do for it??

Put it safe in a box and release back where you found it at dusk with a dish of non fish based dog food and some water

Could have just been having a leg stretch! Does the hedgehog charity still exist? Tiggywinkles? Could drop them an email for advice. I love hedgehogs. We had one living in our garden called Branston Prickle.

Our garden hedgehog sometimes pops up in the day.

I’m not in the UK. Slightly sad update. When he started moving I could see a back leg was badly injured (no skin on it). I called my vet to ask could I bring it to them and they said yes. Unfortunately by the time I’d made the phone call and wrestled shoes into my 2 year old, hedgehog had done a runner.

I let my dog out to see if he could track it but I have a big garden that backs onto a field so at the moment I don’t know where it is.

Oh no! I would leave some food out for it-it might be drawn to the food.

YeOldeTrout · 23/10/2018 17:34

shorter days they are out more often in day time, I dare say don't panic.

almondsareforevermore · 23/10/2018 20:23

We took one to a wildlife rescue just because it was out in the day. They immediately found fishing line caught around its legs and said that out in daylight is always a danger sign.

TatterdemalionAspie · 23/10/2018 22:14

@Hoppinggreen that is really crap advice. Hmm A nursing mother will sometimes come out during the day in the summer, but most of the time, a hedgehog out in daylight is in trouble and should be checked by a rescue/rehabilitator.

A hedgehog out in the day at this time of year needs to be weighed and checked over. They need to be a minimum of 450g to survive hibernation, and that's only if they look nicely rounded (ie not skinny and sunken around the haunches). If they have a heavy tick burden, are snuffling/mucuos-y or there's any evidence of green poo, they need to go to a rescue.

OP the ideal thing to have done would have been to catch it immediately and put it in a box. You could try leaving out a dish of water and some meaty cat food or cat biscuits to see if it'll come back and you can catch it.

TatterdemalionAspie · 23/10/2018 22:16

It's worth going out after dark and standing still and quiet for a while - they're noisy little buggers, so you might hear it snuffling about. Have a torch, gardening gloves and box ready, and move fast, though - they're surprisingly fast!

TatterdemalionAspie · 23/10/2018 22:18

@YeOldeTrout eh? Why would they be out more often in day time because the days are shorter? Hmm
