Anyone tried varifocal contact lenses?

Just curious as to how they work, how you have to adapt etc!

Used to wear CLs in the past, moved back to glasses, but am constantly taking them on and off, off for close work, on for distance.

Your experiences? Costs?

TIA

I did a couple of years ago.
Can't remember the cost but know I preferred my glasses,I found the contacts not as good as my varifocal glasses for some reason.

It worked best for me when I had one eye for distance and one eye for reading. My optician let me try different types of lenses until I found what I was happy with. Unfortunately I got very dry eyes last year and had to change to glasses.

If you do one eye for distance and one eye for close up it will cost the same as if you only have them for distance. Varifocal lenses are more expensive. Have you thought about varifocal glasses. I couldn't be without mine

I did, for years. I had fortnightly ones prescribed by an independent optician. I had three or six month supplies and got on really well with them. My prescription changed though and I gave them up, but I had them for probably fifteen years.

I asked my optician as I have a similar issue.
Varifocals would be around £50 a month according to him. And not easy to fit (I also have astigmatism which prob doesn’t help).
He wasnt particularly keen in the idea of one lens for lose work, the other for afar. As in it doenst seem to work well for people.
So I’ve stuck to varifocal glasses instead....

I have varifocals all day all night with Specsavers which cost £30 per month but I find if I wear 1 lens at a time my sight is better. so I wear a lens in the left eye for 2 wks then swap and wear another in the right eye for 2 weeks. Perfect vision!

I have daily disposable varifocals. Approx £50 a month from Lenstore.co.uk. They are fab. I started at .05 Rt and .75 Lt. I now have 1.00 Rt and 1.25 Lt and find them the absolute answer to lifelong long sightedness complicated by old age 49!! Think I've been wearing for 4 years.

woodhill · 22/10/2018 20:59

Interesting about spec savers as mine will be £40 a month. I find they're okay but my vision isn't that great with them in and I wonder if I'd be better having reading glasses and distance contact for the clarity of distance

GreenTulips · 22/10/2018 21:01

My husband was offered a free trial

Worth asking as they are an expensive item

Aridane · 22/10/2018 21:01

I have one near distance reading lense and a distance one - brilliant - no reading glasses required

Miljah · 22/10/2018 21:03

Thanks, all!

@woodhill I started off with a pair of varifocals bit often needed +1 reading glasses too for close reading. The I ran out of lenses and was stuck with just 1 for a few days - turned out i could see better with 1 lens than 2. Definitely give it a try!

Most optometrists will allow you a free trial of multifocal lenses, there are plenty in the market. Cost wise £30 a month upwards depending on if they are monthly or daily.
Monovision is also an option, pp’s have mentioned it. One eye is corrected for distance and one for near, it’s not typically recommended if you do a lot of near work or driving but it can be a really good solution for some people. Speak to your optometrist, they’ll be more than happy to help you out- and if they aren’t go elsewhere.
