Any dentists about? Really worried about DS’s new tooth

5yo DS has started cutting his adult molars at the back of his mouth. He has not lost any baby teeth yet.

I am really worried about the bottom left molar which seems to be coming through really yellow :-(

We take him to the dentist every 6 months and he’s never had any problem with his baby teeth. No fillings, nice and clean and white.

This new bad boy has just appeared in tbe last 2 weeks. Is it rotten??!

Going to make an appointment with the dentist for my day off work on Wednesday but has anyone seen this before? Is there any way this could be innocuous?!

Rather gross mouth close-up attached...

I'm not a dentist, but I'm a Grandmother and new teeth can look yellow. Once they are all through, they look fine and are as strong as they should be.

hi op. dentist here. that looks hypoplastic to me. basically sometimes when the first adult molars come through the enamel hasn't formed properly and can look slightly yellowish and discoloured compared to the other teeth. They are not decayed but because the enamel is slightly softer than normal they can be more prone to decay more easily and just need keeping an eye on. are his two top front teeth through yet? they may also have yellow flecks on them when they do.

Hi, I'm a dentist. I can't say for sure from a picture but it may be an area of hypoplasia. Which basically means that the enamel has not developed quite as it should. This can make the tooth softer and more prone to decay. I would wait for it to come through a bit more then go and see your dentist for a proper look. Don't worry too much if it is, you may need to be extra careful with diet and brushing though to reduce the risk of decay.

Oops, crosspost!

My ds has similar except his was grey and I really panicked! Dentist said hypoplasia as above.
Ds says that tooth is more sensitive.
Dentist has done fissure sealants on all his back teeth anyway which should protect against decay.
None of his other adult teeth have come through yet and i’m Really worried they will all be like this Sad

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 22/10/2018 19:17

Yeah I agree it looks a bit hypomineralised/hypoplastic. Just basically more susceptible to decay. You will have to make sure you keep it really clean and be extra careful with diet, it's fairly common. The dentist will probably just put fluoride on it and keep an eye on it, don't worry!

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 22/10/2018 19:18

disney and OP the other first molars might be the same and maybe his two front ones but it's unusual for it to be all of them

Disneydilemma · 22/10/2018 19:20

Will they change to white eventually or is there something that can be done cosmetically (And to protect them)?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 22/10/2018 19:20

My DD has this. As above it’s poorly formed enamel.

Did he have lots of ear infections?

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 22/10/2018 20:05

Disney, they will probably stay grey sorry.

As a child not an awful lot, if they need filling it can be done, fissure sealents and fluoride will protect them best they can. When he's an adult there's always things like crowning or filling them with white fillings. The problem is is that you would probably wouldn't want to take away healthy tooth so you'd probably only do those things if there was decay, the enamel an also make it difficult for white fillings to stick.

Really though most people don't see peoples adult molars because they are so far back so I wouldn't worry about it, plus if you think lots of people have metal fillings and crowns it won't stand out Smile

Disneydilemma · 22/10/2018 20:22

I’m not worried about the back ones as much as the possibility that his front ones might be affected too. Still-can cross that bridge if and when it comes to it I guess.
