It's a terrible idea to buy DD (9) a hot glue gun isn't it?

It is, isn't it? She's fairly responsible, so wouldn't misuse it but she is quite forgetful.
Is 9 a ridiculous age to even be considering it? She'd bloody love one though Grin .

Can’t she use it under your supervision? I have one- I love it!!

GreenTulips · 22/10/2018 18:10

The glue burns like nylon - so when on skins it's really deep and painful

I wouldn't

GummyGoddess · 22/10/2018 18:10

If she's careful and you supervise to ensure it's turned off it will be fine. I love mine.

Sirzy · 22/10/2018 18:10

It probably wouldn’t be first choice of gift for most 9 year olds so presumably it’s for a good purpose in which case get one and use under supervision

Bishybarnybee · 22/10/2018 18:12

Can you get one and let her only use it under your supervision?

I love mine and it is very useful but lethal if you have the bright idea of using it under your sink and don't realise that the hot glue will drip downwards onto your thumb leaving a nasty burn and permanent scar!

AChickenCalledKorma · 22/10/2018 18:12

Fine to have one in the house that she uses under close supervision. But probably too young for her own one. Especially if she might get it out when doing craft with friends who are less careful/don't pay attention.

LaChatte · 22/10/2018 18:12

DD (8yo) uses mine under supervision and it's fine. I've burnt myself a few times though and it hurts like fuck.

wonderandwander · 22/10/2018 18:13

Really?

My boy had one at 5. Completely recognised the implications. Never burnt.

Runnynosehunny · 22/10/2018 18:15

My dd had one at that age but she is very careful and sensible.

FuzzBallMushroomP · 22/10/2018 18:16

She's forever making things and 'improving' anything she can get her hands on.
I would supervise every time but I know she'd love it to be hers, not ours/mine.
DH said no straight away...then about 10 mins later came back with "she'd be in heaven though wouldn't she?".
It's probably a terrible idea.
Hot glue shoes can wait! Grin

We’d get the children using one in school at the same age. Strict supervision, low melt, safety goggles.

CoperCabana · 22/10/2018 18:17

Ermmm my two had them when they were 6 and 8! Mind you the 6 year old has never used hers. But the 8 year old has without any drama. They were the mini ones from Hobbycraft which I thought were aimed at kids! Blush

gingajewel · 22/10/2018 18:18

My eight year old has one! She loves crafting and creating and is very sensible!

FuzzBallMushroomP · 22/10/2018 18:19

I think sticks of glitter glue would actually make her cry happy tears.

OvOntToSuckYourBlood · 22/10/2018 18:20

My youngest got one when he was 8. He’s a sensible type and has never burned himself.

Though I’ve yet to use one and NOT burn myself. And I’m sigting against cushions right now that have hard spots from dried glue. Blush

Hobbycraft do small ones for cheap - we got him one of those as it doesn’t heat up as much as the fancier ones.

elephantoverthehill · 22/10/2018 18:22

As a pp has mentioned make sure is a cool melt one and get a tray to use it on.

Want4dayhelp · 22/10/2018 18:22

We have one. I was giving my dc who is 9 a demonstration and explaining how important it was to concentrate on what you were doing while using it..looked up at him to check he was listening and I managed to burn my fingers so bad I had blisters Blush

So I think it's fine just be careful not to stupidly burn yourself like I did when giving her the safety talk Grin

FuzzBallMushroomP · 22/10/2018 18:23

Yeah, I'm pretty confident I'd burn myself before she did.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 22/10/2018 18:25

I'm over 50 and I can't use one without burning myself. Blush I would be prepared to let my 10 yr old DD use one under supervision though.

FluffyMcCloud · 22/10/2018 18:26

My son got one for his 8th birthday. Never been a problem! Used with supervision.

SoupDragon · 22/10/2018 18:27

I dont see a problem. DD has had one since about then and all 3 of mine used them at school throughout primary.

quarterpast · 22/10/2018 18:29

My boys have the cooler version of a hot glue gun, it still melts the glue but is only warm not scalding.

LadyDeadpool · 22/10/2018 18:31

Poundland sell them for £2 and they don't get as hot as others like the one I have with two settings which is freaking lethal. Evil bloody things but so useful.

GummyGoddess · 22/10/2018 18:56

It's not much different to using a soldering iron, and we were using them at school at 9.

ArabellaUmbrella · 22/10/2018 19:07

I managed to burn myself quite badly with a hot glue gun, got a massive blister on my little finger. I'm a reasonably sensible person! Far too easy to get a dollop of glue on your skin.
