What sort of spreads do you have on your toast?

My toddler is 16 months old and a bit of a fussy eater!
She does love wholemeal toast and has a massive sweet tooth - I used to give her peanut butter spread but after catching a tummy bug last weekend shes really gone off it. Confused

What sort of sweet but healthier spreads do you use? I've read that jam is packed with sugar, and honey is a no-no... Any ideas?

(She's my PFB if you couldn't already tell! Wink)

I love a bit of lemon curd. Lovely and sweet.

Jackshouse · 22/10/2018 13:12

I have marmalade, so loads of sugar. Honey is fine after 12 months but it is also very sugary.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 22/10/2018 13:14

She can have honey.

Cream cheese

While honey is sweet, it's unrefined sugar rather than the refined sugar in jam.

Charley50 · 22/10/2018 13:34

Marmite. Get 'em on it while they're young.

Charley50 · 22/10/2018 13:35

Sorry I realise that marmite isn't sweet, but have you tried it with her? She might love it.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 22/10/2018 13:36

Bovril, cream cheese, Nutella... not all at the same time! You can get versions of Nutella that are more natural and less sugar too.

We have the same issue (I’m still pfb about my 2nd born!). I don’t think there is a perfect thing to have as most toppings are either sweet or salty.

At home they get:
Peanut butter (meridian one so no nasties in it)
Butter
Cream cheese
Hummus
Banana (sort of squish it down so it sticks to the toast)
Honey

At nursery they put spoonfuls of sugary jam on. I try to unclench and pretend I can’t see....

VenusInSpurs · 22/10/2018 13:43

Mashed avocado
Marmite (spread very thin)
Cream cheese
Melted cheese

'Deli tubs' like:
Mackerel pate
Hoummous
Taramasalata

Personally I would look for things that have nutritious value beyond sugar, and encourage her to enjoy fewer sweet tastes. Peanut Butter was a good option - she may well go back to it after a break.

Butter and jam or marmalade
Just butter
Fish or meat paste (both mine love it don't know why)
Marmite
Cheese triangle/cream cheese/cheese spread
Nutella/chocolate spread occasionally
Some pates are ok
Dips like hummus, bean dip, garlic and herb, guacamole.
Egg mayo/deli filler
Or mini sandwiches made with ham etc.

PastaSauceHoarder · 22/10/2018 14:53

Ah thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Okay so is honey actually not too bad then? She only has half a piece of toast alongside her porridge so its not like she'd be having a lot of it each day. I think she'd like honey!

Lemon curd sounds good too, though is it as sugary as jam?

She is actually very good with savoury foods at teatime - its just at lunch/brunch time the little monkey tends to only want sweeter things, so I've been giving her more breakfast-type foods which seems to be going down quite nicely.

Shop bought jam and lemon curd are about equal in sugar content.
Honey is much higher sugar per spoonful, but you would probably use much less because it is so much sweeter.

I would just use butter, and not make sweet spreads part of the routine. It isn't necessary, and they get hooked.

(I never banned sweet stuff, though)

VenusInSpurs · 22/10/2018 15:09

The advice is not to give honey to children aged under one isn't because of the sugary sweetness, it is because it can contain a certain bacteria or toxin that can be dangerous for babies. But they can have it older than one.

But basically honey is pure sugar.

NatashaRomanov · 22/10/2018 15:15

Banana and a spoonful of peanut butter mashed together.
No butter required. It is my favourite at the moment!

BumDisease · 22/10/2018 15:58

I know it's a bit old fashioned (and not sweet) but I love a bit of sandwich spread on toast...

Babybearsporij · 22/10/2018 17:23

Butter
Marmite / bovril / vegemite / chicken bovril (very salty though)
Peanut butter
Other nut butters
Various jams
Various cheese spreads
Flavoured cream cheeses - the salmon philly goes down very well with my DC

PastaSauceHoarder · 22/10/2018 18:04

Bananas used to be her favourite but she's gone off them now, the little wotsit. Though I like the idea of mashing them up with some peanut butter, that sounds lovely!

She's getting her back teeth at the mo so its not surprising that she's not fancying her usual favourites. Just can't stand the thought of her going hungry, and I know that porridge and toast seems to fill her up!

Mashed banana with a bit of honey.

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 22/10/2018 18:15

Philadelphia
Avocado

For my dd I used to put fruit purée from the squeeze pouches on her toast. Ds prefers marmite, full fat unsalted butter.

Could also do things like scrambled eggs on toast? Very quick and can have cheese and butter etc added for calories.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/10/2018 18:17

Sorry s-posted with you there.

If you think it’s teething, I’d use a teething gel and maybe a dose of Ibruprofen.

Try her with a bit of banana ice cream, a frozen banana, or some homemade ice lollies too Smile
