Bank worker sick pay

I'm a community based bank nurse. I work in schools so it's term time only.
I've injured a tendon in my leg so I'm currently off sick. I'm in a plaster cast and having surgery this week.
I've been told I'm not entitled to any sick pay.
Is this right? I'm likely to be off for several weeks as I can't drive or weight bear.

Yes unfortunately that is the case with bank work. I’m a nurse and need to leave my current job but I won’t just bank because I have chronic health issues and wouldn’t get any sick pay. Could you contact the CAB to see if you’re entitled to any benefits while you’re off? (Disclaimer - I don’t know much about it but my friend got some while off after a hip replacement and he’s in a similar position).

Wonder if you could apply for ESA
www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance

Thank you for the link.
Really disappointed that I can work the same hours as a contracted person with none of the perks

This is the case with Bank work. However, I only recently realised I could claim holiday pay.

pretendingtowork1 · 23/10/2018 08:18

That's the point of bank work. You get paid more per hour and you don't have to give notice if you want to leave, or accept shifts you can't do. In return you get no sick or paid annual leave.

Bombaybunty · 23/10/2018 09:48

Paid exactly the same ( or slightly less) as the contracted workers, so no financial benefit at all.
No contracts available when I applied.

Then you've been had. Were you looking for a proper role? Most people do bank for the money and the flexibility.

Bombaybunty · 23/10/2018 18:44

Only bank positions available when I applied a year ago.
I was out of work so I applied and got the job.

Please don't think I'm being unkind because it absolutely isn't supposed to be but did you take a Bank contract without reading it?
Bank workers don't get sick pay, some allow you to accrue holiday pay as you go but never sick pay (well certainly none I have worked for the NHS)
