Do you have life insurance? How much do you pay a month?

We really need to find some cheaper life insurance, our mortgage advisor signed us up to it and we stupidly agreed without actually researching it ourselves. We're with Royal London and pay £50 a month for both DH and I, it covers us for 35yrs (that's how long it'll take to pay our mortgage) and pays out £100k if one of us dies or has a life changing injury. However if DH dies I get £1000 a month as well as £100k until DD turns 18 because I am a SAHM.

We need to find something cheaper, but just as good as what we have now. Any suggestions on who we should go with or where we should look for it?

Am with legal and general.
Would recommend calling London & Country who will do a comparison for you to find the right deal.

I pay £29.68 a month and that’s for £405,000 on death or upfront if I’m diagnosed with a terminal illness

We pay £12 a month and that pays out half the mortgage if one of us dies. No critical illness yet

£46 a month for £650k cover. With vitality so 40% off gym membership, free cinema, free coffee and reduce amazon prime and a cheap Apple Watch if I do enough steps.

As bonfire says, speak to a broker. Also, have a look on a comparison site like money supermarket, to check prices.

Since you already have cover, you'll have a starting point on what products to check for comparison, but do be aware:

  1. Different providers will have slightly different terms (e.g. what conditions are covered for critical illness, what would qualify as 'life changing') so make sure you're comparing like with like.
  1. You should consider an income for your DH if you die or are incapacitated too. You may not earn money, but without you he would have to pay for childcare etc Sad

I'm with lv life and pay around 8 pounds a month, think it's 8.50 for 200k pay out

MarilynsDressOnAVent · 22/10/2018 00:33

I pay £6 a month and DH will get over £100K if I kick the bucket. I can't remember who I'm with.

£8.51 a month. £100,000 on death, which is enough for us. Also have work death-in-service benefit of 3x salary IIRC. Was with friends provident taken out aged 36, now become aviva.

Until we retired, DH had 6x salary (I would have been a very Merry Widow), and I had 3x salary.

Now we have none.

It’s slightly meaningless to get numbers on here as the quotes will vary due to cover amount, age at start, length of cover, health conditions, smoking status etc. Just get on to a price comparison site or a broker. Your 1000 a month will be adding a fair bit to the price as will the 35 years. It will also depend on whether your premiums and cover are flat and whether the insured sum will rise with inflation or not.

Mine is expensive but we have extensive joint cover until we’re 70 and the premiums are fixed. I’m hoping with inflation the monthly sums won’t seem as much over time.

£8 a month for £200K. Dh started his earlier & only pays £6 for £250,000. We both also get 3x salary for death in service plus pension payouts
