Nits are destroying my thinning fine hair!

I have 3 little girls aged from 6yrs to 2yrs and they go to school and nursery. I accept nits will happen, I keep their hair short and nitty gritty comb after each bath. We have several nit combs so we can tackle the job.
But then I have to do my hair and chunks of hair comes out! Its so upsetting! When does it all stop?!

Do they have nits? That seems excessive if it is just precautionary.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2018 21:23

Do you really check that often? Do they ever have head lice?

DontFuckingSayIt · 21/10/2018 21:25

Only do it if you actually have headlice, it's not nice stuff to keep soaking your hair in unnecessarily. And all the combing will be breaking and stretching hairs left, right and centre. You'll know if you have nits, it itches like hell and you can see them, especially if your hair is fine or light coloured.

Oops sorry I've read properly now 😳 I see you're just using the comb. Ignore the first bit.

415wakeup · 21/10/2018 21:31

Is it the nitty gritty comb that you are using? I found that pulled out my dd's fine hair, so I got a different type of comb and now it's all good

I don't like the nitty gritty at all. I use an alternative one with shorter pins that doesn't rip your hair out

Summerfalls · 21/10/2018 21:35

Never been able to use nit combs in my hair they just rip it out and get stuck, (course wavy hair’) was very curly when I was younger. I always used a normal fine tooth comb and lots of conditioner to de nit.. it worked.

GreenDinosaur · 21/10/2018 21:39

@zzzzz I was quite impressed by the herding idea!! Thought you must be some kind of nit guru!

Rory786 · 22/10/2018 08:59

Unfortunately having 3 girls means we are very rarely nit free. There are always eggs to comb out before they hatch into big mamas.

And then I have to do mine as well otherwise its back to square 1. I remember the first time I saw nits crawling on the comb I nearly heaved, but its amazing what you get used to!

Also I think its psychological but my poor head always feels itchy now. I will have no hair left!!

3 girls or not, you should be nit free most of the time. Use a proper lice destroying lotion on all of you asap and boil wash all bedding and towels before you send them back to School. A one off dose of some chemicals will do no harm ffs!

zzzzz and GlitterGlassEye

All the girls are at pre school and school so they are in contact with lots of children. Sometimes I comb their hair and there is nothing and sometimes the comb is crawling! Its disgusting. I use Hedrin too, gosh it makes their hair so greasy.

Hair is too short to plait. They have short bob cuts. I cut my hair too!
Please tell me it gets better!

I know its not a quick fix but my mum used to put my hair in a tight pony tail and spray hairspray into it, Didn't get any after that.

gigglingHyena · 22/10/2018 10:27

Love the idea of nit herding, I have a picture of a very small border collie Grin

Constant reinfection sucks, are you reporting back to nursery/school each time. I believe our school only send out the letters when they've had a a few reports so as not to identify a particular child.

There's a national bug busting day coming up, perhaps they can be persuaded to take part. Really helped at our school to try and synchronize as many families as possible.

Bug Busting Days take place on 31 January, 15 June and 31 October.

The mention of nits makes me itch, it does get better but I saw my daughter lovingly hold hands with some very young children and after the oh that’s lovely I thought ih no worms.
I don’t think you can ever be sure they are gone.

Teaonthelawn · 22/10/2018 10:38

It was the days of short, spiky hair but using hair gel each day used to keep my son free from nits. A bit like the hair spray idea. Otherwise conditioner and comb. It is horrible you really have my sympathies. He is at College now but it still makes me shudder.
