DS (12) has never enjoyed reading or being read to. Even as a toddler he would push my hand away and close the book, whatever it was. As he got older he just changed the subject as I tried to read to him and when we would read a page each he had no clue what had happened on his page, and blatantly didn’t listen when it was my turn! It has got marginally better when I found him books to suit his interests, but just very short books and his interests are specific (morocross, bmx, karting!) and we’ve run out! He has recently quite enjoyed all the David Walliams ‘Worst Children’ books, which are probably a little young really but at least he was reading. He is a sensitive soul and won’t read anything remotely ‘scary’ or ‘sad’, so we need something funny, not too trying, not too long, but appropriate for his age! Any ideas?! I know you will help me on here Smile

Might be slightly young for him but Jeremy Strong ones or Captain Underpants. Or Diamond Brothers series by Anthony Horowitz.

Diary of a wimpy kid? Very accessible.

Is Adrian mole too dated now? It might be worth wandering around the children/teen section of a library without him for ideas.

I often do this for my reluctant reader as I find online lists, though well intentioned, tend to come up with the same older offerings and new books are missed.

If he liked the David Walliams ones he might like the other stuff my oldest DS likes...

His favourite other author is Pamela Butchart, titles like Baby Aliens Got My Teacher and The Spy Who Loved School Dinners.

He also liked Terry Pratchet books for younger readers.

Haggisfish · 21/10/2018 20:20

All the David Walliams ones are funny and he’s not too young at all.

Has he read Roald Dahl? It's what really got DS started. He also strangely loves some books of silly poems that I got him for Christmas. He seems to dip into them a lot.

Terry Pratchett's Carpet People is v funny
Also Eoin Colfer The Legend of Spud Murphy, and Worst Boy in the World
The David Baddiel books are amusing and easy reads also.

How about Doctor Proctors Fart Powder?

The Wimpy Kid books (by Jeff Kinney) are funny and have lots of illustrations which break up the text so it doesn’t seem as daunting. The Tom Gates series (by L. Pichon) is similar. My DS (12) is not a particularly avid reader but has read both series. He also loved the How to Train Your Dragon books, but they are a bit longer.

Would he read cartoons/comic books such as Tintin, Asterix, Beano etc. My son will spend hours with this kind of book.

TaggieRR · 21/10/2018 20:37

Mine likes wimpy kid and tom gates

I'd second what a previous poster said about the Anthony Horowitz Diamond Brothers series - very funny and not difficult read. I loved them as a kid (and re-read some as an adult!)

LilyChantilly · 21/10/2018 21:07

The whole series of Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton. They are hilarious and completely off the wall! Made both me and my DS howl with laughter Grin

The Day my Butt went Psycho by Andy Griffiths
