Help! I’ve accidentally dyed my daughter’s white dance costume pink!

God, I’m desperate! She’s in a show on Thursday and I shoved her blue and white nasty shiny polyester dress into the wash as it was a bit stinky. Unfortunately, there was a red sock lurking and now the white parts are pale pink.
I’ve soaked it in vanish, then washed it on 30 degrees with colour catcher sheet, glowhite and more vanish but no darts.
Is there anything else I can do? She is crying and saying that she’ll be taken out of the dance (knowing her theatre school, she’s probably right!)
Any advice before I have to fess up and potentially pay an absolute fortune to get another one made?

You want colour run remover - the Dr Beckmanns one - rescued many a garment in this house!

Longdistance · 21/10/2018 19:29

Bin?

Sorry, it’s nit going to work whatever you do. I’ve accidentally dyed t-shirts, etc from white to navy, and tried everything. Yep, they’re still a tinge of navy Sad

RockCrushesLizard · 21/10/2018 19:29

Oh, and keep it wet! I find it comes out better when I don't dry it. Lots of soaking in powder/glow white until you get colour run

Thanks. Our local Tesco extra didn’t have colour run remover. I’ll have to try Sainsbo’s tomorrow. I’ll soak overnight in vanish.

I dyed a white t shirt grey on Friday Angry
I’ve not been able to get any of the dr Beckmans in Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s so I’ve ordered some online from amazon.

dancinfeet · 21/10/2018 19:39

was the costume made by someone, or from a dance catalogue? The options would be to try a colour run remover, ask the teacher if she can order another for you to buy (but be prepared to pay for additional postage costs as well as the price of the costume). Failing that, be prepared that if there isn't a spare available, then she will not be able to perform in that dance. Dance costumes are not supposed to be machine washable. Best of luck x

BrazzleDazzleDay · 21/10/2018 19:41

I recently posted about a similar problem. Neither of our supermarkets had colour run but managed to find some dylon colour run stuff in semi chem, worked a treat!

Coldhandscoldheart · 21/10/2018 19:42

Or, or, if it’s panels, any chance of getting some new white horrible polyester & paying someone to replace those panels?

PreseaCombatir · 21/10/2018 19:43

Try the vanish bar. Wet with cold water, rub and froth it up and try and ‘scratch’ the material through the froth

MajorBumsore · 21/10/2018 19:46

brazzledazzle what is semi chem.
I’ve googled and seen that they do it in Wilko.
Yes, I know I should have hand washed, but I put it on the hand wash cycle in washing machine. I think you’re right that she won’t be in the dance. I feel awful. Poor kid has worked so hard and is in the front row.

I’ll get the vanish bar too.

Dr Google suggests vinegar or lemon

AviatorShades · 21/10/2018 19:53

Flowers for you,OP and more Flowers for your daughter. Been there, done that! The suggestions already mentioned worked (sometimes) for me, so fingers crossed they'll work for you. Good luck!

MajorBumsore · 21/10/2018 20:02

Do you know anyone with kids in the next class up that might be able to lend you an old one?

MajorBumsore · 21/10/2018 22:29

No, it’s a specific costume for a show unfortunately.

Try a dry cleaners and ask if there's anything they can do?

abbsisspartacus · 22/10/2018 13:11

Any luck?

Aviana · 22/10/2018 13:19

If it was plain white, I'd say bleach. I did the exact same to one of DD's shirts the day before a concert. And to add insult to injury it was the only thing in the whole wash that changed colour!

I bleached it for 15 minutes (google laundry bleach and you'll get the quantities) and then washed it a couple of times to get the bleach smell out. BUT it was plain white and cotton so I genuinely don't know what would happen to coloured polyester.

and look for a nicer theatre school!

Notfair2030 · 22/10/2018 16:35

Bleach.... then wash again

AviatorShades · 22/10/2018 17:58

How"s it looking now,OP?Flowers and fingers tightly crossed....

MajorBumsore · 22/10/2018 23:25

Just come back to this! Amazingly, the theatre school have come through with a spare costume. Can’t quite believe my luck, as the dress is still decidedly rosy!
Thanks for all of your help

I'm SO pleased to read this!Smile

Good luck to your daughter for the performance on Thursday, and I'm sure your daughter will shine like a star!Star

NoSquirrels · 22/10/2018 23:44

Well done. Was going to say Fess Up Now!

My MIL is Costume Mistress fur a dance school. She’d either move heaven and earth to get the colour out or make a new one on hours notice. She wouldn’t see your DD but dance. She’d make you feel ASTONISHINGLY guilty for YEARS, but that’s the price Grin And also why she never ever trusts parents with costumes!

Glad it’s sorted. Take them extra wine/gin/whatever as thank you!
