20 month old, accidental overdose of nurofen

I have 20 month old DD a 5ml dose of Nurofen at about 3pm and told DH who gave every impression of having heard me. Then I went up for a nap (me and DD have the same stinking cold). Came down at 5.30pm and DH told me he had just given her Nurofen and said I hadn't told him about the earlier dose. So she's had 10ml within a 2.5 hour window.

Called 111 to be on the safe side. They didn't seem concerned but said a clinician would call us back to check things were okay. They haven't called back and I'm starting to doubt myself now as am not sure if the call handler meant they would check with a clinician who would definitely call back or whether clinician would only call back if she thought it was necessary.

DD has been absolutely fine in herself but will be getting cranky and drowsy soon as she had an early nap.

Any advice?

Don’t worry too much. As same age DC2 ate a whole adult paracetamol. I was panicking. Called 111. Told to keep an eye but not to worry. Dosages on the child medicines are so low it’s very unlikely to be a problem.

Just dont give anymore - they will be fine. When DS had issues with a fever coming down the doctor gave a large dosage to do so so I think there is a lot of leeway

hidinginthenightgarden · 21/10/2018 18:44

It will be fine. Just don't exceed the recommended within 24 hours dose. At that age we alternated between paracetamol and nurofen just to be safe.

I don't know what dose .you should be worried at, sorry. But lots and lots of fluids will help flush her liver and kidneys through, so I would be pushing juice, water and milk

Pinkgeorge · 21/10/2018 18:45

Is she a big baby!? Usually goes on weight.

Fightthebear · 21/10/2018 18:45

5ml is the correct dose for her age. You left 2.5 hours between doses, rather than the minimum 4 hours.

You did the right thing checking with 111 but I expect it’s not a priority matter which is why they haven’t called back. Make sure you don’t exceed 3 doses in the 24 hour period.

Soubriquet · 21/10/2018 18:45

She should be fine

The dosages are never really accurate on the bottle as it doesn’t factor in the child’s weight.

Long as she hasn’t had more than 3 doses in 24 hours

topsyanddim · 21/10/2018 18:49

We accidentally gave too much when our baby was much younger. 111 weren’t that bothered, Ibuprofen is quite hard to overdose on (unlike paracetamol) and they said they give massive doses in hospital sometimes

idlenook · 21/10/2018 18:50

She hasn't had more than three doses, no -- and she's currently wearing pajamas her 5 year brother has only just outgrown so I'd say she's a good sized baby Grin

Thanks all; I'll put her down now and just keep an eye on her.

When DS2 broke his hand, the ER doctor had to put bone back in place and before doing it, they gave him a very big dose of Nurofen and who I commented on it, they said to me that it was still safe .

a double dose is fine.

Anythingforacatslife · 21/10/2018 19:00

There’s much more leeway with doses for ibuprofen than there is with paracetamol. It’ll be fine.

Been there. DH forgot to fully screw the lid on the Calpol. DS (5 at the time) was merrily drinking it. We called NHS 24 and were able to guesstimate how much he'd had as I knew roughly how full the bottle had been.

They calculated based on the maximum he could have had and his body weight. It was under the amount that would require him to be seen by a physician. We were just to keep and close eye on him. He was completely fine. We were

Been there too! I have identical twins and gave the same twin two doses! Spoke to a doctor and they said it was absolutely fine. Just don't exceed the 24hr limit as others have said. Hope you're concerns have been alleviated.

flumpybear · 21/10/2018 19:24

Yo did the right thing and its likely to be fine.

Keep a proper chart of giving doses of medicine in future - my husband is dreadful at such intricate dosing etc - thoroughly shit in fact I rarely trust him - so just be really vigilant

Also shouldn't be given on empty stomach - at those intervals you may have done

Anythingforacatslife · 21/10/2018 21:43

Just to add, this is why we’ve always had a very strict rule in our house that only I give the medication, unless I have specifically asked DH to do it.

MintRolls · 21/10/2018 21:49

Sounds like everything will be fine. It happens, especially when kids are sick and you're both so tired.

For the future me and DH have a system where we text each other when giving a dose. Really helps when they're up all night and you got up at 2am to settle them and give a dose but didn't want to wake DP but then he gets up at 4 and doesn't want to wake you to check, he can just check his phone to see what was given when.
