Please help me ... am I unemployable?

I was fired for misconduct. Unable to prove that I didn't do something, has meant that my 20 year career is over.

Once the investigation started, I had just started making plans for a new career and so I resigned. They accepted my resignation, but then told me the investigation would continue. They also changed my four week notice to eight weeks at this point. It dragged on horribly, until they finally sacked me, the day before my notice period ended.

At this point, I had been training for my new career for five weeks, but felt I had to tell them what happened. They asked me to leave the course, a) because of what I "did" and b) because I hadn't told them previously. I didn't think I needed to, as it was all still ongoing. I told them as soon as I definitely knew what was happening. I apologised for this but they still told me they didn't want me.

I desperately need to work as soon as possible but now I feel like no one will accept me again. I don't know who/where/how to try to find something.

I'm so sorry OP. I followed your old thread. I can't even give you any advice but wish you all the best.

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:02

Thank you. My old thread died and I really missed everyone.

I don't know what to do!

I'm sorry op I also recall your old thread. The good news is the investigation is over I guess, but the bad news is it has ramifications.

Are you still unable to say what you have been fired for? It's very hard to advise here on what to do without it. For example is it an issue that is very general and will impact any job, or is the issue you were trying to work in a related field?

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:24

They are saying I broke confidentiality. Explaining how they think I did but I didn't will out me though.

Violetsandpansies · 21/10/2018 17:26

OP - You can't be the first person this has happened to. May be worth posting on some of the legal job forums to see if people there can give advice.

Do you think you can do some volunteering in the meantime to get back into a routine?

Violetsandpansies · 21/10/2018 17:29

On what they said you did wrong front, is it possible to try and to explain that so it doesn't resonate with people? Maybe make it specific and not related at duties in any new role.

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 21/10/2018 17:35

What sort of thing ate you looking for and what wage level?
Are there any jobs you would be barred from because of the investigation?

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:37

It's a medium wage professional job. I don't have any experience of shops/bars or anything you can get quickly. I'm a single mum with a mortgage, I can't afford to volunteer. I need a wage next month.

abbsisspartacus · 21/10/2018 17:37

Can they legally force you to serve 8 weeks notice instead of four? I would have walked away

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:38

It is very specific but as it generalises to breaking confidentiality, people are just going to run a mile (in anything I'm qualified and experienced to do at least).

Linked0ut · 21/10/2018 17:39

This is awful. Former Employers' opinion are given far too much weight imo

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:40

Abissspartacus - that in itself was a drama that went on for weeks. I had about five final dates in the end! Probably not legal, but I don't have the time or money to fight it. I need to move on very quickly.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 21/10/2018 17:42

Ok if it's breaking confidentially I think uou need to work in a field with no confidentiality requirements. So it would seem it will be a complete change required.

HerRoyalNotness · 21/10/2018 17:42

What transferable skills do you have? You must have a skill set you can transfer into any industry?

I didn’t read your original thread but it seems shoddy that you had to prove you didn’t do something. Surely they should be proving you did.

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 17:46

I've always done people things. I can't work a till or do account balancing type stuff. Everything needs experience. And not a bad background.

AtSea1979 · 21/10/2018 17:48

I’m guessing you work in some sort of health care field. Can you look in to transferring those skills to admin type job and take a salary drop and top it up with tax credits etc? Is their any help you can get with the mortgage whilst you look for something. Does your mortgage insurance cover being fired?

misstblue2 · 21/10/2018 17:48

would you consider working in mcdonalds or kfc ect where they will train you on the job. i know some ppl think its a crap job but its a wage and you could still apply for other jobs in the mean time.
alot of places will be looking for christmas staff and sometimes they keep you on afterwards.
good luck op hope things get better for you

DeadCertain · 21/10/2018 17:52

If you really need a wage next month and will do anything to get it whilst sorting yourself out a longer term plan have you looked at supermarkets for online shopping assistant vacancies?

I currently do that as a second part time job for extra much - needed money alongside my main work and for the supermarket I work for it's not a bad wage at all for what the work involves. Feel free to PM if you want to.

Shazafied · 21/10/2018 17:54

Can you take a mortgage holiday to ease things ?

Princessgenie · 21/10/2018 18:29

I strongly recommend lodging a claim. If your notice period was four weeks and you resigned then you were under no obligation to stay employed by them beyond that point. In which case your reason for leaving would be resignation. They could still conclude everything in your absence if they wished but you would not have been dismissed you would have resigned. Am confused why you allowed them to do that.

CherryPavlova · 21/10/2018 18:31

If it’s healthcare join an agency or bank? Actually you could join a temping agency anyway.

needsahouseboy · 21/10/2018 18:34

Are you not in a union? I have not read your old thread, sorry. Did you have anyone supporting you?

gingajewel · 21/10/2018 18:35

I work in hr and I too would lodge a claim, it is free to do and you can call Acas for advice. If your contract states four weeks and they made you do eight they have broken the terms of your employment and this will go in your favour. It will be seen as they wanted to sack you rather than let you resign and by doing that they have broken there own policies.
I would think about lodging a claim for unfair dismissal......

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 18:40

The union said they couldn't support me once I resigned. They supported me up until that point.

ilovemybath · 21/10/2018 18:41

Could you pm me about the online supermarket work?
